He may be short, but he is not stupid. Whenever Winry asked him, "Have you been careful?", he'd always answer with a nod and a big smile. And all would be forgotten.
There is only one problem with that plan – his automail arm. If he came back for a regular tune-up, the story and smile would work. But if he came back with this arm in pieces…- holy, could Winry hit hard with that wrench.
Nothing pissed his automail mechanic off more than him coming back with her masterpiece in a million parts. Sometimes, he swore that the automail is all she really cares about – but he would never say anything because he's a genius – a genius, damnit – and he's known her for years, and knows that she's not like that (not really). It's just her way of showing that she cares – and he loves her for it.
A hug, a small kiss, notes left here and there, just little signs of affection to show how much he cares for and appreciates her. She promised she would wait – wait as long as she needed and he was glad.
Yes, Edward Elric was not stupid. He knew he had to live this battle and the next because he had a girl waiting at home for him.
He would be stupid to make her wait forever.
