Kurt Hummel simply could not stop crying.
It didn't matter that he'd never met Jean. It didn't matter that Sue had been awful to him and his friends before.
None of Sue's previous antics could possibly bother him anymore, because the fact remained that he really felt for her. He understood her pain, or at least, what she'd been going through. He remembered his mom. More than he had in a long while. He remembered the last time he'd seen her smile before she'd died. It was one of those memories that usually crossed his mind in dreams. As much as he loved Carol, and as long as it had been since his mother's death… Kurt couldn't help but miss his mom.
Surprised to have made it through the entire service without being reduced to a sobbing mess, Kurt didn't know what to do was sitting outside on the steps of the funeral home crying his eyes out. He'd lied to Finn and said no, he didn't need a ride, Blaine was picking him up and they were going out. He didn't think he could handle being asked if he "needed to talk about it" one more time. As much as he loved his brother, he hated Finn Hudson's lack of tact. Now, all Kurt wanted was to feel better, and to be alone.
Well, actually… The idea of seeing Blaine was pretty nice. Maybe he could make that lie a reality.
Hoping that Blaine wouldn't mind yet another tearful phone call, Kurt whipped out his phone and pushed the speed dial he'd set up.
"Hellooo?" Blaine's silly drawl calmed Kurt to an incredible degree, allowing him to take a breath and gain control enough to speak.
"Hi Blaine, I-" without realizing it Kurt broke into a fresh round of tears, making his speech garbled, sobs interjecting him after every word.
The desperation in Blaine's voice was evident, "Kurt? I- I can't understand you when you're crying, sweetie, could you maybe-"
Kurt let out a shaky breath and finally said "Can- Are you busy?"
Without missing a beat, Blaine asked Kurt where he was and said he'd be there within a matter of minutes.
After several minutes of quiet weeping, Kurt saw Blaine's shiny, sleek black car pull up. In an attempt to better his face, which he was sure was a wretched mess, Kurt wiped at his eyes. Blaine exited his car and practically ran over to Kurt.
Weakly smiling, Kurt greeted Blaine with a soft "Hi." The obvious misery in Kurt's eyes was too much for Blaine. "Oh, Kurt…" Blaine sat down next to Kurt and delicately wrapped his arms around him, hoping it was the right thing. Kurt all but melted into Blaine's chest, longing for the closeness and comfort. Despite the circumstances, a wave of happiness (or was it just love?) overcame Blaine as he held Kurt tightly to his chest. Kurt let go. Kurt didn't shy away when Blaine took him up in his arms, he trusted that Blaine was just going to be there for him, and that thought alone made Blaine's heart swell. This was what trust looked like, this is what love was. Oh. Love. That's what's been in Blaine's mind for the past few weeks. Blaine bit his lip as the words wanted to leave his mouth, but he held on to them. There would be another time.
Finally breaking the hug, Kurt leaned into a chaste kiss, his eyes lingering on Blaine's moments after.
"Thank you", Kurt finally whispered, lips parted still from the kiss. The hint of a smile finally crossed his face as Blaine brushed the remainder of a tear from Kurt's cheek.
"Anytime", Blaine whispered back. "I'm always here for you."
