Face in the Crowd

By Random1377

It has been five years… five long years since the end of the war.

Five long years since the world got back on its feet, shaking itself with an almost audible sigh, as if to say, 'I'm not going to be beaten that easily!'

In silence, the brown-haired man walks down the rain-soaked sidewalk… heading home after another dull day at work.

Occasionally he looks at the faces of the people that pass him by… hoping to see one that he recognizes… but they've all gone…

Not everyone survived the war… and those that did, felt that a new beginning would be easier elsewhere.

His friends asked – begged – him to join them… 'Come with us…' they pleaded, -There's nothing more for you here… now…-

But he simply could not let go… too much of what he is is rooted in this rebuilt city…

He sighs… maybe today… maybe today he'll leave.

His friends are right… he knows they are… but how can he leave, when she still lives here?

The one true thing in his life… the one person who never lied to him… the one he loved with all that he was…

The one he couldn't hold…

And then…

A trace of red… a glint of blue… and there she is.

Just like she was so long ago… like a goddess, descended from the heavens… looking exactly like she did then… when she left… when she said no…

He opens his mouth, and her eyes find his. A million feelings flash between them… good… bad… somewhere in-between…

His mouth closes, and instead he nods slightly.

Our time is gone… he thinks, it ended when I asked if she would be mine… she said no…

She smiles… just a touch sadly, and returns his nod.

Then the moment is gone.

She turns away… he turns away… any chance at the love they had both hoped for washed away like a chalk drawing in a summer rainstorm.

She is no longer his love… not that she ever was, because he waited… he hesitated… he didn't ask until she had already given her heart away…

And now… now she was just like he was… a face in the crowd…

…just another face in the crowd.

The End
