Because I trust you

Summary: As a Turk you must trust your partner.

A/N: A story I wrote for my youth group. It is very short and sweet.

I still remember the old ways of doing things, I remember how we use to have to pass gruelling tests to become a Turk. It wasn't like how it is now, people use to die trying to pass the tests. Many people dropped out at the start, few survived to be a Turk. This is the story of the day I thought I would die…

The wind blew at the top of ShinRa tower, it was a strong continuous flow of strong wind that made Reno's pony tail fly back behind him. Standing near by was his partner, a veteran named Rude, this would be Reno's final test before becoming a Turk. He couldn't help but wonder what this final test would be and why it would be held over seventy stories above the upper plate of Midgar. The red head rocked back and forward on his heels waiting anxiously for the arrival of the Turk second in command, Tseng. The door opened and Tseng came out, his black hair was tied back behind his head as was regulation and his uniform was immaculate.
"Reno, are you ready?" he asked inspecting the trainee's disgraceful uniform.
Reno nodded, "Yeah," he said breathlessly, "let's get this over with."
Tseng nodded once moving over to Reno, "Turn around," the red head obeyed and a black cloth was placed over his eyes, "Rude will guide you around the roof, you will have to trust him. Understand?"
Reno swallowed, "Yeah… "
"Good," Tseng place his hands on Reno's shoulders relishing how quiet the loud mouth had become due to the blindfold. He moved Reno around until he was sure the younger man was lost, "Now you have to listen to Rude," he released Reno and silently walked away.

I quivered like a leaf in the breeze, I was terrified. I couldn't get my muscles to work when Rude began to direct me, it took him several attempts to get me to respond and obey him.

"Four steps to your left," he instructed and Reno obeyed. After the fourth step he froze certain he was at the edge of the tower and it was truly terrifying, he could never survive a drop like that, not even the Great General Sephiroth would, "turn around," Reno didn't miss a beat obeying Rude's order with relief. The red head swallowed his Adam's apple jutting in his throat, "Two steps forward," after stopping Reno heard the wind make a strange shuffling sound but he quickly focused back on Rude, "Fall back," Rude instructed.
"WHAT!"
"You heard me Reno, fall back."
"Tseng, he can't be serious!" but the second in command did not reply and Reno's fear increased.
"Reno, fall back," Rude said evenly.
The red head swallowed, if he obeyed he would die, if he disobeyed he would die too. Hopefully a splat would be less painful then what ever the Turks would do to him. Taking one final breath Reno fell back and into something firm and warm. 'That was fast…'

Above him someone laughed and the blind fold was removed, Aqua eyes blinked up at Tseng who stood perilously on the edge of the building, "It is good to see you can trust us," he nodded straightening Reno up and moving him away from the edge of the building, "you just need to learn to obey faster.

That was the most horrifying thing I have ever done, nothing I've done as a Turk can compare to thinking I was about to throw myself off a building. I guess that is why we use to do it that way, it prepared us for anything and everything we would ever have to do as a Turk. The four months of training has saved me thousands of time. It is kind of sad to think that they don't do things the same way any more, don't mistaken me the Turks are still a tight and efficient bunch, but no matter how many years someone is a Turk they can't compare to the level of trust and companionship between Rude, Tseng and myself.
