"Ginny?" Mum said, walking into my room. "Happy birthday, baby girl." She walked up to me and wrapped her arms around me.
"Thanks mum."
"Come on. Up you get, get dressed and come down for breakfast," she said, patting my cheek before leaving the room. I sighed and pushed the covers back. Time to face another day … My 16th Birthday. Every girl looks forward to her 16th birthday. When I was younger I would talk about this day … but now that it's here, it doesn't feel like that fairytale story I wanted.
When I came down for breakfast a chorus of the birthday song broke out. I plastered a smile on my face and said my thank you as everyone handed me presents. The one gift I really wanted wasn't there. I glanced around at my family members and saw the looks of sweet sorrow on their faces. I couldn't handle it so I ran out of the kitchen and into the back garden. I stopped at the fence and looked out. The birds were chirping away in the tree tops whilst I stood there crying.
"Ginny, what's wrong?" I heard Bill ask. I sniffed and wiped my tears away.
"Nothing," I mumbled. Bill grabbed my elbow and turned me around to face him.
"If it was truly nothing, you wouldn't be stood here crying. I'm going to ask again. What's wrong?"
"I miss him," I whispered.
"Ron? I know, I miss him too but wherever he is, he's safe. We just have to stay positive," Bill said, wrapping his arms around me. I rested my hands on his chest and sniffed.
"Yeah, I miss Ron but … I'm talking about Harry…."
"He'll be alright, Ginny," Bill said, rubbing my arm. I nodded even though Bill's words were not reassuring. No words were. How could we be so sure? Times have changed. nothing feels right anymore.
The day passed without much event. Members of the Order of the Phoenix came in and out. The Burrow was like a safe house now for those that are left.
"No word yet on Ron, Harry and Hermione?" Fred asked. Dad shook his head. Fred and George had closed down their store and had moved back in with us.
"It isn't safe for them to send owls or anything." they continued to talk about the trio and about what they thought they were doing. I played around with the food on my plate, trying to block out their conversations. It hurt to hear their … his name.
"Ginny, you haven't touched your food?" Mum said.
"I'm not hungry," I mumbled.
"Ginny, you haven't been eating since …"
"Since they left," Bill said, finishing Mum's sentence. It was silent around the table.
"Well…right…Ginny, what subject are you taking for your N. E. W. Ts? Your letter should be coming soon, don't you think?" Dad asked.
"I'm not going back," I said.
"Excuse me?"
"I can't go back, Dad. Not there…"
"Ginny, everyone has to attend Hogwarts…It's compulsory."
"I don't want to go back to the place that reminds me so much of … so much of him," I said standing up.
"Of who, dear?" Mum asked.
"Harry!" I said, turning my back on my family.
"Harry?" Mum said, as though she had never heard of the name before.
"Yes, Harry. It's bad enough you have to bring his name up in every conversation you have. I can't go back to the place where I know everyone will pester me on the whereabouts of Harry because I'm the girlfriend he left behind," I said, turning back around to see my family's chocked faces. No one apart from Ron knew that Harry and I were dating last year.
"Girlfriend?" Fred and George said.
"Ex, actually."
"Ex-girlfriend?" Mum said.
"He broke up with me after Dumbledore's funeral," I said sighing. Bill stood up.
"That little-"
"For my safety," I scoffed. Bill's facial expression softened.
"None of that matters anyway," I said, walking off.
All in all, this was probably the worst birthday's ever.
