A welcoming ceremony for Korra. And she had invited Mako.
Well, yes, she had invited Bolin, too, but Mako couldn't believe he was being forced to dress up for this thing.
"Can you imagine all the pretty girls who are going to be there tonight?" Bolin commented. "And I bet they have money. And power. Spirits, they're gonna be pretty."
"Bolin… shut up," Mako chided, rolling his eyes. That's when he realized; Korra would be dressed up. An image of this eluded him. Could she even dress up? Was that allowed?
She seemed too tough to wear a dress. Maybe she was. It wasn't law that she dress up for this party, was it?
It probably was, because when Mako showed up, his hair awkwardly slicked back and himself in one of his nicest outfits, all of the other ladies were in fancy dresses as well.
He was still underdressed, and he felt like crap because of it. The championship would change situations like this, for him and for Bolin. Neither of them would have to feel less-than-worthy ever again. … Although, it didn't look like it was affecting Bolin.
He was flirting with three ladies at once… as always. Mako sighed, shaking his head. Bolin would never learn. Someone tapped Mako on his shoulder, and he turned around.
"Thanks for coming, Mako," a cheerful Korra greeted him, her hair down in curls. There she was, dress and all. It was long, and gorgeous. Gathered just under her bust and tied in a bow in the back (he assumed). Water tribe blue with a white lace overlay. The blue disappeared at her shoulders and allowed the lace to consume her arms. A deep V-cut served as the neckline.
It didn't at all suit her, but he smiled because it was kind of adorable for her to have attempted it.
"You look handsome," she said, grinning.
"Oh, please, compared to dresses like yours and suits like his—" he pointed randomly into the crowd of people, knowing that it would hit someone in a nice suit "—this is nothing."
"But it still looks handsome on you," she said with a sweet smile. A smile that he couldn't help but return.
A smile he kind of wanted to see more often.
"You look lovely," he lied smoothly.
A/N: Headcanon. Mako would think she looks ridiculous in a dress (and she would), but compliment her anyway.
