Shikamaru couldn't take it anymore. He was playing shogi with his crush, talking about the chunin exams. Interrupting what Temari was saying, Shikamaru reached across the shogi board stopping Temari from placing her piece down. "We need to talk," Shikamaru quickly said.
Temari looked up confused. "We are talking, aren't we?"
"Troublesome," Shikamaru mumbled to himself. Answering Temari, he said, "I don't mean about the chunin exam, we still have three months till they start. I'm talking… about something else….." looking down at their joined hands.
Noticing where Shikamaru was looking at, Temari also looked down and when her mind processed that they were holding hands, she blushed a deep red. 'Please don't notice me blush!' Shikamaru, being the genius he was, could easily read Temari's body gestures and smirked when he saw Temari's face. "Follow me," the kunoichi looked up from the joined hands with a questioning look and saw a serious look on a usually relaxed face.
'Asuma-sensei, I hope I'm doing the right thing.' Tugging on her arm, Shikamaru lead the suma ninja off the porch and into the forest behind the building.
"Where are we going?" Temari asked.
"Just close your eyes and be quiet." Shikamaru answered while mumbling Troublesome under his breath. Temari, pretending to ignore the mumble, found her trusting Shikamaru and follows his lead.
After walking for five minutes, Temari heard Shikamaru telling her to open her eyes and when she does, she doesn't believe what she is seeing. They were standing in a clearing, facing a small lake, with flowers surrounding the whole of the area. A small breeze blew across the field and Temari could smell the soft scent of roses.
After standing there for a while, Shikamaru finally spoke."This was where sensei proposed to Kurenai…. One of the most precious memories he had before he passed…." Shikamaru turned around to face Temari, a single tear at the corner of his eyes. "I promised him when I was ready to bring someone I trusted here… Hey, close your eyes for a second."
Temari gasped when she heard the shinobi's sensei died and when told to close her eyes, she listened without comment. She heard a shuffle as Shikamaru walked behind her and feels a cool piece of metal on her collarbone. "You can open your eyes now," she heard him whisper. She opens her eyes and looked down to see a ring on a silver chain.
"It's beautiful," she exclaimed.
"It also means you will be mine as long as you wear it," Shikamaru said looking completely serious. "Promise me you will never leave me."
"I promise," Temari answered without hesitation. "I will never leave you."
