Benjamin was afraid of the dark, that night - and it hurt her heart seeing him like that. She sat on the side of his bed, keeping him company until the boy was asleep. The silence filled the entire house then, and she felt lonelly for an instant. Longing for the past.
Her eyes wouldn't face him - they couldn't. Her vision was suddenly blurred by unshed tears. Daisy felt weak in just a moment, so tired of all of that. Exausted. She closed her eyes and imagined it was the man laying by her side, not the 10-year-old. She pretended it was old Benjamin's heat keeping her warm. Wished his big hand would brush against hers while he slept so close.
Two tears slid down her wrinkled face. She forced herself not to sob, trying to keep control of her emotions. Then a small hand pushed away those tears, catching the woman by surprise. She opened her blue eyes and found the boy watching her, an arm still stretched in her direction.
"Don't cry, Daisy."
Oh, how long had it been since the last time he said her name?
Daisy couldn't move. She sighed, her heart aching with a crushing nostalgia. She never felt the other tears that rolled down her cheeks, her wet eyes focused only on the boy's face. She could recognize the lines, the eyes, the man underneath the childish façade - and that just increased the pain in her chest.
He remained still too, his eyes sparkling as if he knew the truth, knew everything he had forgotten on the past few years. Benjamin looked very serious for a moment, and then his head came closer to hers. He whispered in her ear.
"Good night Daisy."
Neither of them moved. She remembered all the times she had listened to the same phrase and wondered if, just for one second, he could have remembered it too.
But then the boy laid down against his pillow and fell asleep instantly.
The woman closed her eyes. She wished some things could be different. But the one sleeping next to her was Benjamin Button, and his case could not be happy. It coulnd't be anything but curious. It was his destiny.
"Good night, Benjamin."
He wouldn't remember anything in the morning.
