Sofia sate helpless, tears rolling down her eyes, surrouded by four concrete walls that
constructed her cell. She had just been been placed in solitary confidment, after recently
being attacked by a group of inmates. How had her life come to this? She thought of her son
and how would she be able to be there for her son. She could hear women screaming and
banging on the walls. The madness. How long would they keep her there? Was anyone out
there thinking of her? What would her family think?
Red sate on the bank of the lake watching all the other inmates play in the lake.
Splashing each other, laughing and having the time of their lives. Not yet have the Guards

would it be before they all were finally caulght?
Boo and Pennstucky play wrestled each other in the water. The water felt so
refreshing. The sky above so beautiful. Crazy eyes and Poussey tackled each other in the
as Tastee back stroked away from them. Tastee caught a glimspes of Flonka smiling at her.
Tastee returned the smile.
Lorna walked up to Red and sate at her left. Lorna looked out at the others
playing in the lake.
"Nicky would've loved this," Lorna said calmly.
"Yes she would've," Red replied.
"I hope shes okay," Lorna said. Resting her had on Reds left shoulder. Red took a deep breath.
"Shes a strong woman. I wished she had come to me. Before she"... Red trailed off without finishing her sentence. Nicky turned and looked at Red.
"Yeh. I miss her everyday. Everything gone down the toilet for me. I lost my van,
Nicky. I have my husband now," Lorna finished. Red turned to Lorna.
"I'm back in charge of the kitchen know. Maybe you can work in the kitchen with me,"
Red suggested excitely.
"You think?!" Lorna exclamed, turning to Red Smiling. Red returned the smile. Both
turned to each other and hugged.
Nicky sate in her cell, her thoughts swarming in her head. She wondered what Red
must be thinking. How was Lorna holding up without her? She could only sit and wonder. She
Hadn't seen the sun or really anyone in days. How many days, she didn't know. The lights in
her cell never went off. This was a practice the maximum prison practiced so that inmates
wouldn't know the difference between day or night.
All Nicky had at her desposole was a book fortunatley entitled "Diary of a Young Girl".
The noval of Anne Frank, a jewish girl who stayed hiding and trapped in an annex for two
years before being discovered. The noval had been a great since of comfort during her time
in Max. The food was allmost ineditable. Nicky been served raw eggs with lumping oatmeal
to mildewed looking meat. Nicky missed Reds cooking in the cafeteria. Nicky missed seeing
Red and Lorna in the morning at breakfast. Red would allways sneak Yoplait yogurt for her.
Nicky even missed calling Red her mom. What to do? What was to become of her? She didn't
know.
Nicky laid on her bunk and stared up at the lights. Outside her cell she could hear guards
hollering and doors being slammed. The constant noise at times was unbearable. Nicky closed
her eyes and drifted away in her mind.
