I recall the times we stayed up late
Wide awake but still dreaming
There was nothing on this earth could make me tired
but memories don't make it easier so

~Goodnight by Buffy Saint Maire ~

Buffy should be happy. She had her family and friends by her side on her birthday. She was laughing and opening presents they had given her. But she felt that something was missing something important. Ever since she had gotten back from her meeting with Angel she had felt a new freedom. Like years had been lifted from her shoulders. They had talked for hours, he was the first person after Spike that she told about her feeling at being back on earth, but he was the one that made the return better. He had told her about the prophesy that he one day would be human. She hadn't believed him first. But then it was all clear to her. One day, perhaps not tomorrow but in the future, she and Angel might be together, without the risk of him turning evil. It made everything better.

Buffy had opened all the presents except one. She picked up the small package and held it in her hands, she felt a small tingling feeling when she held it, in her minds the thought whispered to her: it's from him. And she knew what was inside the box. Somehow he must had found it after she had placed in the mansion on the floor where she had send him to hell. She smiled and stroked the box tenderly. Then she looked up and continued to talk to her friends. It wasn't time to open it yet.

Later the evening Buffy sat alone in her room looking out through the window were Angel so often had climbed in to visit her. She took of the paper around the present carefully and opened the small box. Inside it lay, just as she remembered it. Her claddagh ring. Angels present to her on her seventeen birthdays. Tears filled her eyes as she slide the ring on her finger making sure that the heart on it was pointing towards her. It felt like the first time she had put the ring on her finger. Like coming home…
