pulling the puzzles apart

The heart is an organ. It is regulated by a very specific system of checks and balances involving muscle contractions and blood flow. Rose Weasley knows it upside down and inside out, all the arteries and chambers and all the ways it works. She knows there's no real mystery to it, no magic, no hoodoo or glitter or shiny little things like the ones her dormmates giggle about late into the night.
Until a pretty boy with hair like the moon and a smile like the sun makes her heart beat against her chest like a trapped bird. Until his soft kisses send her mind into a tizzy. Until strange fluttery things crowd her stomach at the mere sight of him. And this, she can't explain. Because the heart is just a muscle filled with blood. Just an organ with rules and laws like everything else. But why does it beat fast around him, warm to his smile and touch and whisper?
She'll drop essays to the floor before him, cease her studying to talk with him, skip her classes to lay in the grass beside him. She'll listen to his thoughts about the future and she won't correct his grammar or interrupt him with remarks about how unrealistic his dreams are. And girls walk by them, beautiful girls with hair that lies straight and curves in places that matter and they glare scathingly at Rose but he pays them no mind at all.
Rose doesn't understand. The boy, the heart, the way she's only herself with him, how he could have anybody in the world but somehow, inexplicably wound up with her.
"Don't you get it?" he asks.
She doesn't.
He shakes his head. "For such a smart girl, you're an unbelievable airhead."
She points out that that's a physical impossibility, but he doesn't respond, he just laughs a laugh that lingers in the air long after it's gone and makes her heart flutter and she decides to stop thinking for a little bit and make him laugh again.

A/N: This fic is dedicated to Maddie (who changes her penname everyday, so I won't bother writing it here at all) because she is wonderful. Hope it makes you smile, darling.
