A/N: This is a one-shot about Snape as Lily and James get together at Hogwarts. R & R xxx
Severus Snape had been bitten by the green-eyed monster.
And no, not talking about the basilisk.
Lily Evans was hanging out with James Potter.
Lily Evans was flirting with James Potter.
That prat.
That egotistical, frustrating, best-friend stealer.
Now translate that into swear words.
That was how Snape felt about a certain James Potter.
It started at one breakfast two weeks ago. He handed her a goblet of pumpkin juice, and instead of dumping it over his head like Snape hoped, she took it with a polite smile on her face, and passed him the butter in exchange. That was not how it was supposed to go!
Later, in the hall, Potter made a joke about the greasiness of Snape's hair being flammable and therefore in dangerous in Potions, and Lily laughed.
She laughed.
At him.
With Potter.
Snape may have sent a Trip Jinx his way, but when he fell, Lily helped him up and asked if he was ok.
He might have been ok.
Severus Snape was not.
Now she blushed when he spoke to her.
Laughed when Snape's name was mentioned.
He showed her some of the secret passages, and Snape caught him teaching her how to use a wizarding watch. That was Snape's job. Teaching her about the magical world. He used to love the astonished look on her face when she learnt something new, but this time it gave Severus a nasty taste in his mouth.
She liked Potter.
But Potter was blindly oblivious.
The one thing Severus Snape and Sirius Black agreed on was that although he may need glasses, James Potter couldn't be that blind.
To not be able to see the beautiful girl right in front of him.
One night, Snape hid outside the entrance to the Gryffindor common room in the hope to talk to Lily, when he saw them. James and Lily were walking back to the common room, hand in hand after patrol. She was blushing to the roots of her hair, and he was laughing at the expression on his face. She looked up at him with a look of admiration, and he tucked a piece of red hair behind her ear. Snape clutched his wand hard and angry red sparks shot out of the end. Potter whispered something in her ear, and she giggled, both blind to the fuming boy merely 2 metres away. Stepping up on her tiptoes, she kissed him softly, sweetly, and then turned and walked through the portrait hole, which opened wordlessly, leaving him standing there dumb-founded.
Minutes later, Snape emerged from his hiding place and walked up to James Potter, who was still standing there with a goofy smile on his face. Potter started slightly at the sight of Severus, and his hand was immediately at his back pocket, clutching his wand. The greasy-haired boy merely scowled at the other boy and pointed his wand at the portrait hole.
"If you hurt her, I will kill you." the Slytherin hissed, but the Gryffindor smiled.
"That won't be necessary. I have no intention to throw her away, unlike you."
Before James could leave, Snape swished his wand and concentrated on Lily's voice, her laugh.
"Expecto Patronum."
A beautiful doe pranced around the dark corridor and stopped in front of an amazed James, who had rare tears in his eyes.
"Look after her." Snape said quietly, and then ran off into the darkness of the hall.
