The second that Juliet closed her eyes, she knew what was coming. She was there again, bound and gagged and dangling off that roof. Every click of the gears behind her sent her one minute closer to doom, to death. The lights from the city below gave her a clear view of the pavement that she would soon decorate with bloody splatters. And then the clock struck, and she was falling.
A scream tore from her throat as her eyes flew opened. gone were the spinning lights and whistling wind of her dream, replaces by a faint greenish glow from the digital numbers on her clock and the soft whooshing sound of the air-conditioning kicking in.
It had been months since Yin. She was in her apartment, in her bed, alone. She was not plummeting to her death, and there was no psycho killer waiitng outside. She had no reason to be afraid.
But logic didn't stop her tears. Her breath came in quick, sharp gasps, and she curled up and buried her face in her knees as she wept. The thin shreds of sanity she had been clinging to were starting to disappear. She was falling apart.
