Sylar's Kills: Maria
Sylar killed many people in his quest for uniqueness, who were they? What could they do? First in a series.
Chapter One
Maria and Jane walked out of the movie theatre; they were laughing. Maria absently waved her hand and bumped it on a low wall. She gave a sharp intake of breath and examined it "I'm bleeding!" she exclaimed and shrugged, "I'll bandage it when I get home." Ten metres behind them a figure watched her, light spilled onto his face, he was young, and there was a curious glint in his eyes. He bent to smell the blood she had left behind and grinned in excitement. He had found another one.
Maria meanwhile had farewelled Jane at her gate and was almost home. She paid no attention to the cars that passed or the little boy that was fiddling with a dismantled electronic. His door opened and a blonde woman stepped out "Micah!" She called and the boy obediently followed her inside. Maria unlocked her door and flicked the light switch. As she reached out behind her to close the door it seemed her hand was completely in shadow. She was puzzled for a moment but dismissed it as a trick of the Darkening sky.
She vaguely noticed a man in a baseball cap passing her front gate, she wondered what the point of a hat at 7.30 was when already people were being cast into shadow… at least she was. Walking into her brightly lit living room Maria noticed that she was still in shadow. Curious and slightly worried she checked all the lights; nothing. She experimented with different positions and different lights. Always; she was drenched in shadow.
There was a knock on the door and the slightly freaked Maria answered it. It was the man in the baseball cap. He smiled at her and she shivered as she pushed his way into the house. "Who are you? " She asked coldly, gathering her wits together "What do you want?"
"My name is Sylar," he said, and she shivered at the name "I want your ability."
"What ability would that be?"
"The one to be hidden, and stay hidden." The shadows around Maria grew darker and she shuddered.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You're doing it as we speak Miss Lennon."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Maria repeated. "Get out of my house, now!" She turned away and the last thing she knew was the agony as her head split open.
As I wrote this I thought about what Sylar could do; who he was. When I pictured him sitting in the Burnt Toast Diner in Texas I thought about how you could never see his face, he was always cast in shadow. I turned that into an ability here as you can see and it is set as his second kill. This is only my first Heroes fic and I would appreciate feedback, critical and constructive is fine.
