A/N: For the captain of the Braid Brigade, because you found me out and I promised I'd post.
Title: Satisfying
Korra pushed open the door to her apartment. Lights were on the kitchen. She grinned; Mako was home before her, meaning she didn't have to cook. "Honey, I'm home!" she called, tossing her coat on the sofa. It drove Mako nuts that she wasn't neat and tidy. It had sparked several arguments early on until they reached a compromise: she could toss whatever she wanted wherever she wanted, so long as she picked it up before going to bed. She was mostly good at it. Usually.
"Follow the delicious smell," Mako called back. She followed his advice. Mm, sea prunes, her favorite. He was trying to butter her up, but for what?
"How was work?" Korra asked, entering the kitchen. She walked up behind her husband and slid her arms around his middle. Best part about being married was doing this every day, and knowing Mako wasn't going anywhere.
"Fine," he replied, stirring the sea prunes. "Beifong yelled at Third Patrol again. I lost the bet because she yelled for ten minutes, and I pegged her at 15."
"Has she figured out yet that you bet on her?"
"Honestly? I think she places bets herself."
Korra snorted. It wouldn't surprise her. Beifong probably timed herself, too, and split the winnings.
"So what do you want from me?" Korra asked. "I know you hate sea prunes."
"Maybe I was just thinking about how much I love you and wanted to show my appreciation," Mako said, adding a pinch of salt.
She poked him in the side as she moved to set the table. "Nice try, City Boy."
"Or maybe Asami invited us to lunch and I forgot to tell you so I went without you."
"Or maybe there's a third, more accurate reason."
Mako scowled at her. "Why can't you just let me do something nice without questioning my motives?"
"Because you hate sea prunes," she said, arranging the cups. "You make faces when you eat them, and you complain all through dinner and the rest of the evening." Finishing with the table, she leaned back and folded her arms. "The reason?"
"There isn't a reason beyond I love you."
Korra raised her eyebrows.
"There isn't. Plus, between the two of us, you're the sneaky one."
He had a point there. Relaxing her stance, she walked to him and hugged him. "Sorry. I guess you are allowed to just love me."
"I do love you," he said softly, leaning in.
"I love you, too," Korra said as his lips captured hers.
Kissing Mako always made her insides tingle.
Pulling back, he said, "But I did make them because I agreed to go on a Man Retreat with Bolin for the weekend, which means I'll miss your birthday."
"What-" she started, but he cut her off with another kiss.
She pushed him off. "You canNOT silence me-"
He kissed her again.
"Stop it," she spoke through the kiss.
"No," he murmured.
Then he kissed her so thoroughly she forgot what she'd been about to say, and just focused on kissing him back.
Some time later they broke apart, hair mussed and breathing heavily. "Mmm," she said. "Slimy, yet satisfying."
"What?" he spluttered. "I kiss you with all I've got, and you say slimy?"
"Yet satisfying," she said. Pecking him once more, she sat down at the table. "Let's eat, Officer. If you're going to miss my birthday, then we're going to eat my favorite dish and you're going to enjoy every bite of it."
Bringing the sea prunes to the table, Mako made a face. "I am not enjoying these. They're slimy."
"Yet satisfying," Korra grinned. "Just like you."
