Disclaimer: I don't own supernatural but it's a lot of fun to play with! Now if I can just get the boys to come down for some real role playing it would certainly be a lot more entertaining!

Running

It was too much. He shook his head at his brother denying what Dean had just told him. "No," he said his breaths suddenly coming in ragged gasps as panic set in. "No."

Dean tried to comfort him tried to tell him they would figure it out together. "No," he said again. He shook his head at his older brother pulled away from the hand he had placed on his shoulder. Then he turned and fled into the night running as fast as his legs would take him away from Dean.

His brother called after him but he didn't stop. He ran down the empty road a mile… two… His father had known. He had told Dean but not Sam. He had even made Dean promise to protect him… and he would. Dean would protect him with his life. Headlights came behind him passed him and cut in front of him. Cutting off his path… his brother yelled his name from the driver's seat as he turned away from the road and headed into the forest.

Sam couldn't let that happen... he wouldn't. Dean was all he had left in this world. Everyone else was gone. They were all dead because of him, Mom, Jessica, his father, Pastor Jim, even Caleb. How many more people were going to die because he lived? They didn't deserve to die… none of them did. And now… now he finds out that he was supposed to be able to stop the demon… with powers and abilities that he had no control over.

"Damn it Dad," he shouted to the night sky. Anger coursed through him as he ran. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you help me?"

He began to tire from his exertions and slowed to walk then stopped and sank to his knees. How? How was he supposed to destroy this demon? How was he supposed to kill the thing that had killed his father? His dad was indestructible. Nothing… nothing he had hunted had ever gotten away from him. The man had taken beatings that would have killed a lesser person… including Sam. He had survived them all… killed them all… except this demon. How was he supposed to destroy the thing that had killed his father when he was not even half the man his father had been?

He didn't understand. "What am I supposed to do?" he cried into the silence of the forest. "How am I supposed to do the one thing you couldn't do dad?"

Rain began to pour from the sky like tears from heaven and still Sam knelt on the ground his head hung low as he despaired over his inability to save the people he loved. "How am I supposed to do this?" he asked.

"You're not," said a familiar voice behind him. "We are going to do it together Sam." Dean knelt in front of his brother mindless of the rain and the dampness of the ground. He put his hand on his brother's shoulder and said, "I promise Sam, we'll figure it out together."

Sam looked into the eyes of the only family he had left. "I can't lose you too," he told his brother. "You are the only one I have left. It would kill me Dean. I… I need to keep you safe."

"Hey," Dean said sarcastically. "That's my job remember. I'm the one who's supposed to keep you safe."

No, Sam thought firmly. This time I am going to keep you safe. I don't know how… but I will find a way.

A/N – Just a little one shot I wrote last night after I read a spoiler that said Dean will tell his brother what John told him the day he died. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Oh… and please review!
