Preface

I never could remember much of my life before the change.

What I could remember were very fuzzy memories, always cloudy and hard to understand. I remember a boy with bronze hair at my side, only I didn't know at the time he was a boy. To me he resembled a god; perfect features, right down to his tousled bronze hair. The most beautiful girl I had ever seen stood by his side, her gold eyes staring into my own. I remember them speaking in hushed tones. No matter how hard I listened, I could hardly make out what they were saying.

"…too much blood. We have to hurry if we'll change her in time. Go, call Carlisle and warn…"

The beautiful girl disappeared moments later, but the bronze-haired boy stayed at my side. Something stone cold touched my face, and I realized it was his hand.

"I'm so very sorry," he said softly as he pulled away. I grabbed at his wrist, clinging tightly. His skin was flawlessly smooth and ice cold, but I couldn't bear to let go.

"Can't…br-eathe…" I remembered choking out. Warm liquid was in my throat. It took me a moment to understand that it was blood.

"You're going to be alright," he answered in a voice that sounded like music. "Can you tell me your name?"

"Christine," I whispered.

"My name is Edward Cullen, Christine," the boy's smile was strained, as though he was gritting his teeth. "You're going to be alright."

The beautiful girl from before came back into view with a tall, blonde man and pretty, black-haired girl at his side.

"She's strong," Edward murmured. "Her name is Christine. Carlisle, do you think…?"

"She'll be just fine," the blonde man answered hurriedly before bending down at my side. His topaz-colored eyes met my own briefly and I could've sworn I saw a hint of guilt in them.

"I'm so very sorry," Edward repeated.

That was when something sunk into my skin and I began to burn. My vision became blurred. Carlisle lifted his head up and stared at me, wiping blood away from his mouth. It all clicked together after that. I started screaming and trashing about uncontrollably as the pain raged on. These abnormally beautiful people were not gods.

"Vampire," I choked out.

A lone wolf let out a long howl into the black sky.
