Prologue

Hi Evans- I mean Lily, Lily Evans...

Sorry I just can't get used to calling you Lily, which is terrible, I know, you have my most sincere apologies.
So now that we're friends (we are friends, right?) I thought I should write to you... as a friend...Merlin! I'm making a right mess out of this!

Ok Potter, deep breath. I'm just going to start this again.

Hi Lily,

How's you're summer going? I'm sure you're enjoying the peace. Hogwarts is many things, but peaceful definitely isn't one of them.

My summer's going well. I miss everyone though, I do see Remus, Sirius and Marley (Peter's on holiday in Spain) most days though...who am I kidding, by everyone, I mean I miss you.

Urgh, that sounds so corny, you're going to get mad at me for sure! Just, er, pretend you didn't read that. If Sirius got hold of this he'd never let me live it down!

Speaking of Sirius, he moved out, his uncle left him a large sum of money and he bought himself a flat. I wouldn't admit this to anyone else but I really miss him, after living with him for so many years it's weird waking up with him not being there. Of course Mum makes him come over for every meal, since he nearly burnt the flat down the day he moved in. He claims he was trying to make toast. Still it's different.

I saw Remus yesterday, he's moping around a bit, since Mary isn't there. I'm sure you know, but she's visiting her Great Aunt and Uncle in Ireland with her Grandmother.

Marlene and Sirius dragged both of us out to some muggle clubs last week, where they managed to get completely smashed. Don't worry Remus and I were sober, we got them home ok. Surprised? I'm sure you are, and maybe even a little impressed? I think you're having a good influence on me Evans! Oops, I'm sorry Lily.

Hogwarts letters should be here next week. Marlene told me how you're secretly hoping for Head Girl, I have full confidence in you Lils, you'll be the best Head Girl Hogwarts has ever seen! You thoroughly deserve it too, you're top of our year, you genuinely enjoy helping the younger students and you're bloody amazing! (And I promise I wasn't being sarcastic. Aww I can see you blushing Lils!)

I was thinking maybe we could meet up in Diagon Alley to get our books, once the letters arrive? Just as friends! Not a date, just a friendly outing, as friends (if we are friends...) Oh sod it! I'll bring Marley and Sirius along, and drag Remus out too. Maybe you could write to Alice and invite her as well?

Hopefully you can make it, we can celebrate your Head Girlness! Just a warning though, Sirius will try and corrupt you!

I sincerely hope you don't want to hex me into oblivion for this.

Potter (Yes I'm calling you that! You prat!)

Of course we're bloody friends! I thought we cleared that up last year! Merlin James!

I was surprised by how easy it was to go from calling you Potter to calling you James actually. I suppose you did talk to me more than I talked to you. You said, 'alright Evans?' at least twenty times a day! Whereas the only time I used your name was when I was yelling at you or complaining about you. Godric I was kind of a bitch to you, wasn't I? Although sometimes you deserved it! Don't argue James, you know I'm right. And I don't mind call me Evans, Lily or Lils, just stop Sirius from calling me Lily-Flower!

Peaceful? Ha, my sister, Petunia, is insane! She's planning her wedding, and our house has been turned into a dump for pink taffeta. It looks like Madam Pudifoots! Honestly nothing at home is peaceful at the moment! Between the fifty dress fittings, numerous cake tastings, last minute additions to the invite list, catering company comparings, decorations, music, seating plans and melt downs over the budget, I'm starting to hate the idea of marriage! And the worst part? The man she's marrying is absolutely vile. She deserves so much better. Sometimes I think she deliberately picked the one man whom I would dislike almost as much as he dislikes me.

I miss you too James, it has been almost a month. I wondered if I'd get a letter from you, Alice made me promise not to write to you first, Merlin only knows why! Something about waiting for you to make the first move, I see why you lot think us girls are so strange.

And of course you miss Sirius! He's your best friend! You're practically brothers, in fact Marley makes jokes that you are and were separated at birth. Oh dear, it would be so like Sirius to accidentally burn his new house down while trying to make toast, remind me to teach him some household spells once we're back at school.

Poor Remus! I've had quite a few letters from Mary, she misses him too. And for someone so placid and calm, she's complaining a lot about how boring Ireland is. Her aunt and uncle are muggles, and speaking from experience, Hogwarts makes the muggle world mind numbingly mundane.

I won't deny I'm a little surprised, who would have thought James Potter could be responsible? I however am not impressed by the fact that you were in those clubs illegally, you come of age at 18 in the muggle world. I'm wiling to forgive you for that though, I know you would have been careful. Of course Marlene and Sirius drank themselves into oblivion! Thank you for looking after them. You don't need my influence you, James, you're growing up. There's no way sixteen year old Potter would have passed up the opportunity to drink!

Thank you James, that means a lot to me. There are other people who are just as deserving of Head Girl and a lot of people would be angry if I got it. I don't want to get my hopes up too much. I didn't blush I swear!

I'd love to meet up in Diagon Alley, I need to escape this mad house! It'll be great to see you and the others. I did meet up with Alice a few weeks ago, I'll write her and ask, but I think she's with Frank in France (How come so many of our friends are away abroad?) she's spending a lot of time with him before school starts and he goes into the Auror program. Apparently letters and communications are discouraged for the first year of training.

Don't expect me to be Head Girl! It's be bad enough that I think I might get it without other people expecting it too! Thank you for the confidence though.
I'd like to see Sirius try and corrupt me!

I've been reading the Prophet and I just want to get back to the wizarding world, so many people are disappearing and turning up dead. I hate being so out of the loop, if something happens I want to know about it. I get the feeling the Daily Prophet is downplaying some of it. I'm a little worried about my family, being Muggle-born and all. I'm scared that if I do get Head Girl, some purebloods might be angry and lash out at my parents. The only good thing about the wedding is that my parents are so distracted they haven't noticed how on edge I am. I'm so glad I'm of age, I set up a few basic protection spells over the house. I know I'm probably being silly, I'm feeling a bit paranoid is all.

Anyway it'll be good to have a day away from it all, I really have missed you James.

Thank you for not making too much fun of me, Merlin that letter was terrible, as soon as I sent it I regretted it! Although I have a feeling you were mocking me with the sign off, the 'Your Friend' part.

Lily Evans, you are not a bitch, nor were you ever one! You might have been a little...rude to me sometimes, but I'm not going to argue that I didn't deserve it.

I have to admit Alice can be a little crazy, and yes Sirius and I often wonder at the insane complicity of you birds. And there seems to be something about weddings that make you even crazier, my cousin Rebecca got married last year, and Merlin that was a nightmare! I don't envy you Evans! Your sister sounds like she might be even crazier than most brides, especially if she's going to all that trouble for someone who we obviously don't like. Don't go off the idea of marriage just because of her! I'm sure you would be a perfectly sane bride.

I suppose I have matured a bit this past year, but don't discredit yourself entirely, after the incident after the Defense O.W.L, I tried to grow up. I felt terrible for what I did to you and finally started listening to Remus' advice. I wouldn't let anything happen to Marley, she is my cousin remember! You're welcome though.

The reason we were at a muggle club is because, it's simply not safe to be out late at night in the wizarding world, especially for well known Bloodtraitors like Marlene and me. Muggle London is much safer.

Everything I said was true Lils, you'll make an amazing Head Girl, Dumbledore would be off his rocker if he appointed anyone else. And I know you blushed, don't deny it!

If anyone is unhappy about you being appointed they can deal with me. I'm not going to lie to you Lily, things are bad. Voldemort is getting stronger and people are disappearing, and you're right about the Prophet. If you want, I can talk to Mum and Marlene's parents about getting someone from the Ministry to come and put proper protective spells up. Not that I don't have faith in your abilities...
I think you have every right to be scared, you have a good reason to and there's no shame in that. But, I do think you need to tell your parents, they have to be aware of what's going on. It could save their lives Lils, and I'm not joking. Things are really bad. There are things they can do to help protect themselves, don't be out after it's dark, don't talk to strangers and you should explain to them about the Imperius curse. I know we haven't studied them yet, but I have confidence that you know about the Unforgivables. There hasn't been anything in the Prophet about this, but the Imperius Curse is being used a lot. And I'm not supposed to know this but Mum thinks there might be moles in the Ministry. You should tell them that if anybody they know starts behaving strangely towards them, or does something they wouldn't normally they should contact someone at once. I've already talked to Mum, she says that they can contact her if they have any concerns, or questions, or if they just want to talk about anything. Another thing, perhaps before they let each other in the house they should ask each other something only they would know, like 'where did we first meet' or such.

I really think you need to tell them, and make them aware of the dangerous times we are facing, but also make sure they know that the safest place for you to be is at Hogwarts, with Dumbledore. Trust me Lily, it's not silly at all. It just shows what a smart, perceptive person you are. I don't want to scare you anymore, but I really think you should know how bad it is, and the importance of having the people you love aware of what you're going through.

Wow this took a rather serious turn didn't it? I'm going to need that day at Diagon Alley too, it will be good to relax! Of course you've missed me, I'm James Potter, how could you not! I bet McGonagall's sitting at her desk right now wishing Sirius and I were there to keep her company in detention tonight. I'm expecting a letter from her any day now, probably going something like this:

"Dear Mr Potter

I have missed yelling at you this last month. My life is so boring without you and Mr Black here, being immature, insolent, disruptive delinquents. I have greatly missed the mischief you cause, and the pleasure of your company in the evenings. I hope you have not been terrorizing any other women in my absence, such a deed would surely break my heart.

Did I succeed in making you laugh Lily? I hope so, you've got a very nice laugh. Er...just like Marley, she's got a nice laugh as well.

Thank you for that, it really helped. And thanks for telling me the truth about how bad things are.

I've talked to Mum and Dad, I explained everything, they were absolutely horrified of course especially about the prejudice against Muggleborns. They tried to stop me from going back, but once I told them about Dumbledore they came around.
Petunia didn't take it too well, she screamed and cried, she seemed to think I was making the whole thing up to ruin her wedding.

If it's alright I'd like to take you up on the offer of the extra protection spells, hopefully it'll help put Mum's mind at rest. She asked me to ask you to thank your Mum as well, she was very grateful to have someone whom she could talk to if she needed to.

And I have yet another thank you to say, but this one's to you and from me, it's for making me laugh, you know me so well James, you always know exactly what I need. Thank you.

I was more than a little rude to you Potter, I was a right cow, although you were a git, nobody deserves some of the things I said and did to you.

Don't worry I won't let them put me entirely off the idea of marriage, Marlene and Alice would kill me if they didn't get a chance to organise my wedding anyway. Although if anybody comes near me with pink taffeta I think someone might end up dead. At the moment I'm not sure if it would be suicide or homicide!

Well I'm being called away to yet another dress fitting, like Petunia expects I've grown in the two days since the last one!

Ok I'm back, it turns out I was being informed that I didn't need to come to the dress fitting because I've been demoted. Since she's decided I was trying to ruin her wedding even more than I already am just by being here, she refused to let me be a bridesmaid. To tell you the truth I'm ecstatic, no pink taffeta for me! Mum had a bit of a melt down though, she burst into tears. They had a huge row, apparently Petunia never wanted me to be a bridesmaid, but Mum threatened to cut the budget, so she relented. Now Petunia doesn't even want me at the wedding at all. She and Mum had a screaming match over it, but Dad stepped in and she had no choice really. Just another day in the Evans house!

I better go make sure Mum's alright. She's so stressed, what with the wedding and now the paranoia over Voldemort.
