Major Monogram sat at his desk with his head in his hands. His mind went back over a decade ago to the day the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were attacked. He lost so many good agents that day. And so many of the agencies in the affected cities lost good men and women. One of his top agents he lost that day was an intelligent Golden Retriever named Tawny. He remembered that she was assigned to a search and rescue worker, the dust from the wreckage killed her. Her host family was devastated by the loss.
Carl Karl, Monogram's intern stopped in front of the Major's door. His mind took him back to when he was a kid, sitting in a classroom, watching the events unfold on the TV. He remember the utter shock that came when the towers came crumbling down with people still inside. The scene was mind numbing and that was the first time Carl had ever been at a loss for words. So many people had lost their lives that day. From that day on Carl wanted to help the world be a safer place, so he lept at the internship with the OWCA.
"Sir?" Carl's nasally voice broke the silence that consumed the office.
"Yes, Carl?" Monogram responded, not even bothering to look up.
"The Evil Scientists all said they wouldn't try anything today, since it is a painful reminder to most citizens. So maybe we should send the agents home?" Carl suggested.
"It would be ideal, but we have to keep them here until five, those are the rules Carl,"Monogram replied as he turned his chair around to look out the window.
"Of course sir," Carl mumbled and went back to work.
Monogram just stared out the window and watched as a plane took off from Danville International Airport. It seemed to gain altitude rather lazily. Not too much air travel happens on today's date. There has been a few instances where Air Traffic Control had lost contact with a few commercial and shipping airliners. The incidents nearly resulted in several F-16s and F-22s being scrambled. Thankfully there hasn't been an instance of that in Danville. The Major hoped that nothing like this would happen again. Other branches of the OWCA were mortified that such a heinous attack killed so many innocent people. It effectively brought the many branches of the OWCA together and more committed to bringing down villains.
Maybe, maybe just this once he could allow the agents to return to their host families early for once. Monogram sighed to himself before calling the Intern back into his office.
"Yes sir?" Carl inquired.
"Let the agents know they can go home now, but they'll be on call just in case," Monogram stated.
"Of course Sir," Carl responded and left to inform the agents.
Monogram remembered the last time he had let the agents go early. Then the news came in about the Pentagon and the Twin Towers. The Agency was put on high alert as the agents were called to help out in looking for survivors. Unfortunately they didn't get too far before Human First responders arrived to dig through the wreckage. As Monogram exited his office, he knew that he would never forget that day those Twelve Years Ago.
I honestly remember sitting in a darkened classroom that day. The news was on,and the principal gave instructions to keep us inside at all times. We were given something to do. I honestly wish it hadn't happened and that those people were still here living their lives. Like Pearl Harbor, 9/11 will live on in Infamy.
