A/N: Found this lying around on an old disk. Thought I'd post it. This is the first fanfic I ever wrote, and it was written during my songfic phase. I just thought I'd put it up. See General Disclaimer for Credits. "The Dance" belongs to Garth Brooks.

~Looking back

On the memory of

The dance we shared

Beneath the stars above

For a moment

All the world was right

But how could I have known

That you'd ever say good-bye~

The evening of the Winter Homecoming was beautiful. The stars were shining brightly above as Sunnydale High School danced to a romantic song. This year, for the first time ever, the dance was being held in Sunnydale Park. The Scooby Gang was in attendance, not only to have some much-needed fun, but also to keep an eye on their classmates. With the type of nightlife they were used, they knew that the group of students was probably in danger. Xander was sitting at the table with Buffy, Willow, and Cordelia, watching as their classmates were getting their dance on. Suddenly a fast song blasted on, and Xander leaned over to Willow and asked her to dance. She refused.

"You know I can't dance to this Xander." She replied. "Wait for a slow song." Xander shrugged and grabbed Cordelia's hand, leading her back to the dance floor. He didn't have to wait long. A slow song came on right after, and he made his way back to the table to collect a dance from his best friend.

"Now will you dance?" Xander asked Willow. She got up and followed him out among the other dancers.

~And now

I'm glad I didn't know

The way it all would end

The way it all would go

Our lives are better left to chance

I coulda missed the pain

But I'd have had to miss

The dance~

As the song was finishing, a group of vampires attacked. It was not unexpected, but the crowd slowly got out of control. People were screaming, and running everywhere. Buffy began fighting the vamps. Everything was moving in slow motion. Xander tried to stop the vamp that tore Willow from his arms, but was knocked down. As he hit the ground his head struck a rock and the last thing Xander saw before he blacked out was the vamp whirling Willow around and sinking his fangs into her neck.

~Holding you

I held everything

For a moment

Wasn't I a king

If I'd only known

How the key would fall

It moves to say

You know I might have changed it all.~

"Willow!" Xander screamed as he jerked awake, tears pooling in his eyes. He wiped at them frantically, trying to get the image of Willow and the vamp at her throat out of his head.
