She was sitting against a corner in her room, feet planted solidly on the floor in front of her. Her elbows on her knees, she held a remarkably-realistic model of a skull a few inches to her face.
He had said: "Without love, a kiss is meaningless."
Tentatively, she brought the skull closer, touching warm lips against cold plastic teeth. Fleetingly.
Nothing. Just the odd impression of hard object against her mouth. She licked her lips, tasting the faint flavour of old plastic.
"Without love, a kiss is meaningless."
She dropped the skull on the floor and buried her face in her hands. Maybe to him, him with his legions of fans and his God-given beauty, a kiss was nothing, the merest exchange of touch between people.
To her…her first kiss could never be nothing. Neither could any other kiss after that.
She had no memory of it and now, she wished that they had never told her. Because now, away from their teasing and panic at her reactions, she wondered constantly.
How did it feel like? Were his lips warm or cool? Did their noses brush so that breath tickled against skin? Did he taste like the yakisoba and tea they had that night, or something more…indefinable?
Did he like it? Like…her?
If she were pretty, beautiful like Noi,…would he do it again?
And even as she castigated herself for useless and impossible dreams, even as she stretched and got up to turn on the VCR and watch more slasher movies, she wished…
