A Simple Word

A/N: I started thinking about the song, "I Wonder" by Kellie Pickler. Ifyou don't know it, it's on YouTube if you want to look for it. Well, this isn't technically a songfic, because I don't use even half the lyrics from the song, but they add some emphasis, I suppose. Oh, this is from Azula breaking the mirror in the trailer...watch closely or look at screen shots, her mother's in the reflection too.

Disclaimer: I do not own Avatar, Kellie Pickler, or "I Wonder". I simply justed used them all to work to my advantage.

Sometimes I think about you,

Wonder if you're out there somewhere thinkin' 'bout me.

And would you even recognize,

The woman that your little girl has grown to be?

'Cause I look in the mirror,

and all I see are your brown eyes lookin' back me,

they're the only thing you ever gave to me at all.

"What do you think you can do for me now?" Azula yelled, holding back her tears. She gripped the handle on her brush tightly to tame the urge to unleash her power on her own mother. "What did you expect from me, knowing exactly what you've done? You honestly believe that I would just take you back like nothing's ever happened?"

Did you think I didn't need you here?

To hold my hand, to dry my tears?

Did you even miss me through the years at all?

Azula felt her throat tightening, making every word she forced out more painful. She took in a struggled breath, pushing herself to keep from crying, and continued, "I'm not what you said I was! There's no apologizing for what you've said and done!" Azula could feel her emotions slipping as she added more softly, "Or rather what you haven't done."

Forgiveness is such a simple word,

But it's so hard to do when you've been hurt.

"Azula," Ursa begins again, as calmly as the situation will allow, "I just want to let you know that I've realized my mistakes, and I want to apologize. Azula, I…"

The princess has had enough of it. Why doesn't her mother understand that she cannot take back what has been said? Can't she see that she's left deep scars on her daughter's young heart? The anger boils back up in Azula as she whips around to throw her brush at Ursa. She realizes, though, that she can't harm her own mother and Azula lets it go at her mirror instead.

As the heavy brush impacts the mirror, the glass shatters wickedly, and Azula breaks down sobbing. Shards scrape at her knees and palms when she collapses on the floor.

If you ever come back home,

I wonder what you'd say to me.

Ursa's face softens deeply and her own eyes fill up with tears. Azula's unhappiness, pain, and suffering…it's all her fault. She steps toward her daughter, watching the sharp, broken pieces, and kneels down. Placing her hands gently on Azula's shaking shoulders, she whispers comfortingly, "I love you, Azula."

There's pounding on the door; guards who heard the yelling and mirror shattering. Quickly, Ursa stands, making her way out the window she came from before the door busts down. Somebody will take care of her, she tells herself, listening to the men discover Azula. I just wish it were me.

A/N: The title is the title because, as the song states, "forgiveness is such a simple word, but it's so hard to do whe nyou've been hurt". Well, after thinking it through, I decided that Azula and Kellie share views with the mother on this subject, and wouldn't really be able to fully forgive their mothers if given the chance. Anyways, review, please!
