THE NIGHTINGALE AND THE SPARROW

There once lived a sweet sparrow whose song was pure and clear,

And one bright day her melody reached the nightingale's keen ear;

The nightingale was cold and bitter, darkness was his friend,

But the sound of this sweet sparrow's voice, moved him to no end.

His hardened heart was melted and he ventured near her tree,

His fear of her rejection kept him much too far to see;

Instead he sang a soft lament to draw the sparrow near.

And mesmerized, she followed him despite her doubt and fear.

As he sang to her of loneliness, , "I understand," she said,

But frightened of the passions he awoke in her, she fled;

He watched his sparrow fly away, to be with the flowers and the light,

And then he understood that she had no love for a creature of the night.

But as the sparrow felt the sun caress her eager wing,

She took pity on the nightingale, and every morn did sing;

She sang of hope and promise to make up for her choice,

"If he cannot have all of me, then let him have my voice."
