I Will Keep You Safe

Blaise was worried. Despite the fact that Draco had seemed to be proud of himself on the train, Blaise knew that he was actually terrified. He'd know him too long to believe that he was really as calm about his mission as he was pretending to be. He paced back and forth across the dormitory, waiting for the other boy to walk in, and hoping to Merlin that he would be alone. He stopped and turned to see a haggard Draco walk in, and then pointedly avoid his gaze as they both sat down next to each other on his bed. Blaise placed his hand over one of Draco's and quietly started, "Draco…"

"Please, Blaise," Draco said, voice just barely shaking, "not now. We'll talk about it later. Just… please…"

Blaise nodded. "Okay. But we will talk later, right Dray? I'm worried about you."

Draco nodded, then leaned his head on Blaise's shoulder. He closed his eyes as Blaise began to lovingly toy with his hair. "I missed you so much, Blaise. I hate all those bloody people and all of their bloody ideals. My poor mother's enough of a wreck as it is; she shouldn't have to worry about me too." He sighed shakily. "I love you," he whispered, and then started to cry.

Blaise automatically pulled Draco into his arms. "Shh, it's okay love. It's alright, I'm here. Please don't cry, Dray. I love you too, so much. Draco, love, please stop crying. It's going to be okay…" Blaise continued rambling, hoping desperately that he was reassuring Draco at least a little bit. He was relieved when, shortly after starting, Draco had mostly calmed down and pulled away to look him in the eye. Blaise ever-so-gently tucked a stray piece of hair behind his love's ear, giving him time to figure out what it was that he wanted to say.

Draco opened his mouth, and then closed it again, looking down and away from Blaise. "Thank you," he said, voice still shaking a bit. "I don't think I'd be able to cope with this without you. It's just that—" He took a deep breath, and Blaise wiped away a few of the tears that had fallen. Draco looked back up. "With you, I feel safe; really, it's the only place I feel safe. I feel like—like things might actually be okay, just as long as you're by my side." He tried to smile, but ended up letting loose another sob.

Blaise shushed him, and kissed him softly and slowly on the lips. It killed Blaise to see Draco like this, and he silently vowed that he wouldn't let him down. "I'll never leave you Draco. And everything will be okay, because I'll be there to protect you. No matter what love…" He pulled back so that he was once again looking into the eyes he had grown to love so much.

"I will keep you safe."
