Lance Sweets was by no means a man who resorted to manipulative means to get his ways.
So why was he doing this? He reclined into his seat, thwacking the bobblehead doll on the table in front of him.
"Don't touch the doll… Hey, Sweets."
Booth was here. Okay. Lights, camera, action.

He didn't want to do this. But he had no choice. When Avalon told him Booth was in love with Brennan, he'd nearly had a heart attack.
As a psychologist, he had to admit that it was a good thing Booth reciprocated Brennan's feelings. Yes, it could be good for her struggles.
Yes, Brennan was the one struggling. She was the aware one. He knew she didn't believe in love, but what she did with Booth – giving his hanky to him for that one little bit of comfort even when she was in need of it, that was her way of showing she'd do anything to wipe away his tears. To see him smile again.
Booth, on the other hand, didn't really know he was in love with Brennan. Sweets alluded it to the fact that his actions toward Brennan weren't really distinguishable from his normal alpha-male tendencies.
He couldn't let them be together, however. If it didn't work out… What would happen? He'd already lost two families. He couldn't lose another.
So when Avalon came to him with that little piece of information, he remembered the brain scans he'd kept in his drawing and started plotting.

When Booth told him he'd already told Cam about him being in love with Bones, he nearly had a heart attack. God, please don't tell me she told him to go after Dr. Brennan, he prayed. Then, he took a deep breath, flipped open his laptop, and started. "Do you know what you're looking at?"

He was there when Booth arrested Tom Fargood. His ears suddenly pricked up when he heard Avalon say to Booth: "Don't worry, my cards tell me this all works out in the end." He zoned out from the rest of the conversation and came to a horrible realization.
I did all this for nothing? What happens if this breaks them apart instead?
Ahh, the things we do for love.
