She Was Never Mine
Preston Burke considered himself a smart man but going back to the place where he lost his love five years later was stupid. He didn't know why he came back, but it felt like he needed too. Sitting at his old hangout –The Emerald City Bar- brought back so many memories of the way they were.
It was open mic night at Joe's and when Burke entered he went straight to the bar trying to avoid attention. When he got to the bar Joe saw him and welcomed him back, "Dr. Burke, nice to see you back."
"It's nice to be back Joe." Burke replied. "Can I get a beer?"
"Sure, it's on the house." As Burke looked around the bar he saw many familiar faces dancing and drinking. He saw Mark Sloan at a table with Callie Torres and a blonde woman he didn't know. He saw a very pregnant Meredith Grey sitting in a booth next to Derek Shepherd -"It's amazing that they are still together", Burke thinks to himself. As Burke panned back over the crowd he saw her, her wild ebony curls cascaded her face she was in the arms of a built man with auburn hair. At that moment Burke did feel a pang of jealousy, "who was this guy, and who is he to Cristina?"
"Joe, I know I have no right to ask but who is that dancing with Cristina?"
"Um, it's her-uh- husband. His name is Owen Hunt he is the Head of Trauma at Seattle Grace." When Joe said that his heart shattered, Burke knew he shouldn't feel this way, but he couldn't help himself.

The next day Burke arrived to Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, it was the first time he had been back in five years and it seemed like nothing at the hospital had changed except the name. Burke was walking around the hospital when he found Cristina at the nurse's station in the cardio wing. She had her hair up in a ponytail and she was wearing navy scrubs which were a change, but it's nice to see she got her dream. As he was walking up to say hello her husband swoops in "Hey, did you have any trouble with Chloe this morning", Cristina asked.
"Not more than usual, she is definitely your daughter though", Owen replied. Burke's jaw dropped when the words daughter escaped Owen's mouth. He didn't want to believe it was true.

As Burke was sitting in his seat in the airplane he couldn't help but think about what could be. It could've been him she had her child with; it could've been him she woke up to every morning. After he heard the conversation between Cristina and her husband Burke thought it would be for the best that he and Cristina didn't talk, she was happy and he didn't want to interfere. Throughout the rest of the day Burke watched every single one of Cristina's surgeries one of which she performed with Owen. He could see the way that they flowed and how great they worked together; it was like they could read each other's mind. They worked with precision and speed, it was an amazing sight. At that moment Burke knew they never belong together, he finally figured out that they were never meant to be. Burke was happy for Cristina, and one day he wishes that he could find what Cristina had already found… a soulmate.
