Little Cat Valentine was sprawled out on the floor, laying down on her stomach, her heels locked together and she kicked them backwards and forwards while she hummed and coloured in a giraffe, murmuring to it every once in a while, telling it her stories, singing to it.
"Who are you talking to?" she heard a girl next to her snap and she giggled, rolling around on her back so that she was facing the girl. The girl had long, brown hair and a pale face but her eyes were the brightest blue Cat had ever seen. Cat thought she was absolutely gorgeous. "I'm talking to my special giraffe! He's called Mr. Purple," she explained, picking the purple crayon from the packet and comparing it to the shade of light pink she had used earlier, she liked to draw, it distracted her from everyday things, well, she was distracted easily in general. .
"That's stupid," the girl huffed suddenly and then Cat turned to her, not offended by her insult. "No, I don't think it's stupid, what's your name?" she asked, brushing the insult away as she rolled around again and started colouring in her picture, which was slowly gaining colour as her crayon flicked everywhere, with amazing grace for a six year old, she just liked to draw, it came naturally to her, like singing and entertaining people, it was a way of escape for her, even though she was so teeny tiny and people confused her with a four year old because of her small stature, she was really smart in that way.
"Jade," she snarled and Cat giggled. "My name's Catarina," she said with a grin, it made her sound so formal and she felt a million years old, except, she pictured herself with flawless red hair, cascading in waves down her shoulders, she'd be tall and she'd wear high heels every day, with little skirts like she saw all those girls wear, she'd sing every day and she could just picture herself being best friends with Jade.
Cat suddenly got rather confused when Jade shook her head. "No, it isn't," the taller girl stated simply.
Cat frowned softly, clearly confused. "What?" she asked, very puzzled, although, in Jade's defense, it didn't take much to confuse the petite girl. Of course my name's Catarina, isn't it? she thought desperatly, looking very upset. What if her name wasn't actually Catarina and she had been introducing herself as Catarina all her life?
"You're Cat," Jade replied simply and started colouring in her own picture, a pair of shiny scissors covered in blood, which scared Cat a little.
"Cat," purred the little girl and then giggled, clapping her hands. "I like it," she said and then scooted over to Jade and to her surprise, the pale girl didn't even pull away, she smiled. "I like you," she said as she coloured in the metal of her scissor drawing. "We'll be friends, then!" Cat said and then finished her giraffe drawing and she signed it with a pen like the big girls did. She wrote in wobbly letters before handing it to Jade, it read:
To my special friend, Jade.
