Music.
Allen was lying in bed, it was cold, the crisp white blanket was pulled up to his neck but the boy's body was still shaking. He couldn't sleep, he hadn't been able to recently, not since… since everything with the 'musician'. And he could hear music. It had been like this every night for the past week, Allen was sick of it. He glanced in the mirror for a moment, then, seeing the shadowy black figure instead of his own pale face, turned back to it. He glared at figure in the mirror, "Why can't you just be quiet?"
Nothing. The swooping, vicious, almost angry music continued.
"Please." Allen got out of the bed and grasped the edge of the mirror, hands shaking. "Please!"
Silence, then… it started again, causing Allen to start, loosening his grip slightly.
He sank to his knees, gazing up at the mirror. Tears streamed down his cheeks, as he moaned in frustration. "Please. I just want some peace. Just one night."
The music continued.
Allen sighed, and stood up, straightening himself out. He left the room and walked down the hall, rubbing his eyes. If he couldn't sleep he would go for a walk, maybe that would clear his head. Maybe. He had no idea what to do. He could talk to Komui… Komui might have some sleeping pills… Or he could….
He stopped. The music had grown louder, clearer. The notes were more defined. And it was a violin. A single violin. Not an orchestra. Not a solo piano. Just a violin. That was strange. Perhaps it wasn't the musician, but who else could play? Allen could tell what the chords were being played. The modulations were strange. D minor to E major. It made no sense, but it worked. In this song it worked.
Allen closed his eyes, tuning his ears to the sound. He walked blindly down the corridor, following the sound. As he walked it got louder. Louder, louder, louder, louder… softer? He turned, walked back a few paces then stopped. He opened his eyes.
Kanda's door.
Allen pause for a moment before he knocked. Was it worth it? Now he knew it wasn't the musician messing with his head he might be able to sleep. He shook his head slightly before knocking. No response. The music continued. Allen turned the handle slowly and walked in. A floorboard creaked. Kanda whipped round, loose hair flying out behind him. He scowled, the moonlight coming through the cracked window causing his eyes to glint viciously. "What?"
Allen glowered back. "I can't sleep." He nodded towards the violin and bow held in Kanda's right hand. "It's too loud."
Kanda shrugged. "Not my problem." He turned back to the window and lifted the violin to his chin again. Allen walked over to the asian man. As Kanda began to lift his bow Allen put his hand on his arm, stopping him from lifting it further. "Please." He spoke quietly. Kanda paused for a moment, before shaking Allen off and lifting the bow.
He began to play.
Allen sighed and walked slowly out of the room. He was too tired to fight. If it had been during the day, if he had had enough sleep for the past two nights maybe he would have fought.
He lay down, putting a pillow over his head and tried to sleep. Then he noticed something. After a half hour… silence. The slowly, softly he heard… A lullaby. The music was beautiful, quiet, gentle, yet somehow deeply moving.
When Allen woke up the ext morning there were tears on the pillow.
