Her eyes shot open. The pale blue of them contrasting with that of the sky's. Her pupils dialated quickly and she stayed. Laying there. Where?
She sat up, slowly. Tall grass. The bright green grass with the solid blue of the sky made her head hurt. Something fell into her eye and she blinked furiously to get it out. She lifted her pale hand to her face and rubbed her eye. When she brought it back down there was a black smear on it.
Soot. Her face was covered in soot. Soot? That can't be right. She stood up to look for something. Anything. Turning around, she saw that there was a print of her body in the tall grass where she had been laying. For how long? The wind picked up and her brown hair whipped at her face. She held her smeared hand over her eyes to try to see further. Nothing. There was nothing but grass and sky in all directions.
She tried to remember how she got there. Where? Here. She dropped her head to see that she was wearing dark blue jeans with a tan jacket over her black shirt. What she had worn Monday of last week. Last week? She was sure it had been last week. What had happened this week? Blank. Nothing came to her.
Fear. No, not fear. Confusion. No, not confusion. Nothing, numbness, apathy. All her emotions melded together until she realized she wanted to get somewhere. Where? To someone. Him. Who? She put her hands on her head and intended to sit down, but instead her legs started walking. Forward.
Her shoes were not meant for walking in this. Not grass shoes. Work shoes. Her arms swung at her sides. She was not thirsty. Or hungry. She was not even breathing. Was she dead? Dreaming?
She stopped walking abruptly when she saw a girl in the distance. Distance? She was a mere twenty feet away. She stared at the girl. She noticed how the girl's hair was about the same colour as her own. The girl's eyes were brown, and her cheeks were covered in light freckles.
"Come back." The girl's voice was steady and painfully clear.
"Where? Back to where? Where am I now?" Her voice was a lot raspier then she had expected it to be.
Suddenly the girl was crying. "Please! Please come back! You can't leave... not now..." Right as the words left her mouth, what seemed to be a giant hook came up behind the girl and pulled her underground.
Startled and confused by what had just happened to the girl, she backed up. There was a rumble behind her and she turned slowly. Before she could see what it was, she was hit in the chest and everything went black.
Yelling. Loud yelling. Beeping. Her head pounded and she tried opening her eyes. It took all her strength to do that one movement, and she cried out in pain. Clarity set in and she realized where she was. White. Everything was white. People where smiling down at her, all of them were dressed in white. Something dark moved towards her. Her eyes darted to see what it was. What? Who. Him. In a black suit. She tried to say something, but a pain in her chest begged her not to.
She tried to sit up so she could get to him, but he told her not to and sat her up, himself. She couldn't keep herself up, so she leaned on him. Silently begging him to hold her. He sat on the white bed and gently wrapped his arms around her. Who? Temperance.
