Stargazer

It's the sky that gets to him first.

It's not the lack of modern conveniences. It's not any lingering guilt from throwing out his own/former kind (the na'vi jury's still out on that). It's not even the prospect of helping lead a tribe in an endeavour that has nothing to do with war. No…it's the sky that gets to Jake first.

It's easy to see the sky on Pandora. Dense foliage aside, it's practically impossible not to see it. True, the moon's bio-luminescent, but barring clouds of the non-toxic kind, there's really very little to obscure the view of the sky. Funny how he's spent over three months on this world and yet never really took the time to see what things looked like in the heavens above from here. Maybe he simply never had time. Maybe it just never occurred to him. Certainly stargazing isn't an activity many can indulge in on Earth.

He stares at them. Clutching his bow. Searching for a yellow star. It's practically impossible to draw a point of reference. The constellations are different. Maybe it's from being in a different star system, maybe it's from being in the southern rather than northern hemisphere (would that really factor into things here?), maybe it's because he's still a skxawng. But he can't find Sol. He can't find home. Or rather…point of origin. He's home here. On Pandora. But you can't change points of origin, and he can't change the fact that the people at said point of origin are going to be mighty pissed that he's chosen to make this moon his home. And kicked them out. He can't help but search for his point of origin, because every time he glances up at the stars, he expects to see a starship obscuring his view.

Maybe that's why he tries not to look upwards too often at night. He's got too much in his wooden bowl right now, he can't afford to include affairs that extend beyond this world to his problems. Problems that just aren't going away. Never mind the day to day activities of food, of shelter, of trying to stay alive. Now he's got Tipani out for his blood by virtue of being a demon, misleading the Omaticaya. Some na'vi don't mind. Others do. Jake prefers to not mention the whole former Sky Person thing and brush off stuff like having five fingers.

Fingers that are suddenly intertwined with four.

Jake looks down from the stars. Neytiri looks up at him. No words are spoken. Maybe it's because all the shouting with the Tipani has left her hoarse as well. Maybe no words need to be spoken. But either way, Jake doesn't mind. In a way, he's grateful.

Because at the end of the day and the start of night, Neytiri can always bring him down from the stars and back to earth.
