An Awful Coincidence Of A Cruel Destiny

Damon Salvatore was standing at Mystic Falls' old cemetery in front of her grave. He stood still there for whole days and nights. He stood there in winter and in spring, in summer and in autumn, always staring at her grave.

It seemed like the pain was paralyzing him. A few tears were rolling down his cheeks and it seemed like they couldn't stop. It seemed like yesterday but Elena died over 100 years before. He still could remember her beautiful smile that always made him smile too and her warm skin that used to be the perfect place for him to find peace.

He still couldn't believe that right when they were about to kill Klaus he suddenly took her and broke her neck.

She fell on the ground and as he tried to unsuccessfully reanimate her by giving her his blood. But it was to late, she couldn't be saved. As Klaus died she died too. Just an awful coincidence of a cruel destiny.

Just the night before she died she found the courage to tell Damon how she truly felt for him, she told him that she loved him, blindly and recklessly, with all her heart. She decided to tell him because she felt that something would have happened to her during the fight. He tried to persuade her to stay away from the battle but she said she couldn't. After telling him she loved him, he made him promise that if he truly loved her he would live even when she died, that he wouldn't try to kill himself for her.

That's the reason why after more that an hundred years he is still alive. When he hold her in his arms, feeling her cold and still and when he couldn't hear the melodious beat of her heart anymore he wanted to die too. He had no reason to be alive anymore, however he couldn't break that promise because he loved her and even after all these years he didn't want to disappoint her.

So every morning he brought to her grave scented red roses, sometimes he sat near where she was resting and started telling her about a young brave stubborn little and adorable girl who was named Elena. She was Jeremy's great great grand daughter. He adored her because she reminded him of her Elena. He was a friend to her, nothing more, he couldn't even think about that little girl like that. He was her protector and she was the reason for him to smile even if he was buried in the darkness.

He still lived at the boarding house and once in a while Stefan came to visit him and his past love. Every time he asked him why he was still living in that damn city that brought him so much pain but he always answered that he couldn't think of living somewhere else because his heart was buried down in the ground with Elena's.
