-I linger in the doorway
Of alarm clock screaming
monsters calling my name
Let me stay
Where the wind will whisper to me
Where the raindrops
As they're falling tell a story-
Ryo sat curled in a corner wishing it would all end. She let her mind wander as the
voices got louder. Her sister and father were fighting again. She winced as she
heard his hand connect with Li's face. It had been like this ever since Ryo had
told Li he had hit her while she was gone. She closed her eyes and drifted to sleep.
-In my field of paper flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me-
Ryo's dreams were filled with nothing but happiness. An eight-year-old's fantasy.
She sat in front of a mirror and played dress up as her mother did her hair. The same
way she had done every morning until she died. Her mother kissed her cheek and
began singing. Ryo smiled and leaned back in her mother's arms.
-Don't say I'm out of touch
With this rampant chaos- your reality
I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge
The nightmare I built my own world to escape-
The singing was cut off by yelling and Ryo being pulled to her feet. She looked
sleepily at Li who was telling her to pack her bag. Ryo just shook her head and tried to
curl back up. Li sighed and left Ryo alone, praying their father didn't find Ryo in the
hall closet. Ryo returned to her dreams.
-In my field of paper flowers

I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me-
Ryo was back in her mother's arms. Shouting was heard far off and Ryo clung to her
parent. Alexandra Kamiya held her close, telling her it was going to be alright.
-Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming
Cannot cease for the fear of silent nights
Oh how I long for the deep sleep dreaming
The goddess of imaginary light-
The shouting got closer and Mrs. Kamiya's loving face was replaced by Mr. Kamiya's
angry one. He had found her in her dreams. Ryo screamed as he hit her continuously.
Moments later the dream ended and she awoke to the living nightmare. Mr. Kamiya
flung her out of the closet. He began yelling at her and advanced on her. Li grabbed Ryo's
arm and pulled her out of the house, shoving a backpack in her arms.
They ran until Li was sure he wasn't following. They then found a place to sleep.

Ryo retreated to her dreams once more. Her mother returned, Li with her. She
hugged them both, tears in her eyes. Mrs. Kamiya apologized continuously for not
being able to protect them. She held them both and began singing.
-Purple flowers-
Ryo curled into her mother's arms; Li did the same.
-Paper flowers-
Morning dawned on the two bruised and beaten girls. The younger one curled in her
sister's lap, while the girl hummed her to sleep.
