Been buzzing around in my head a while. Aeron is contemplating after ending D. Please review with any criticism that can make me better.
Until I Return To Your Side
Aeron stood above the Scar. He had failed Elena. He had failed Athos, even Imperia. He had failed himself. He had done something wrong. Aeron clawed at the small hope that it had been the gods, that the Way of Aios was punishing Elena for eating the flesh, and Aeron for so readily bringing the banned meat. But no. It was not. Aeron, it was all Aeron. He knelt down, contemplating the fathomless black pit spread before him. The same pit that he had tried to send Elena's body down an hour ago.
"Aeron," Mavda's voice ruptured the silence that had been Aeron's sanctuary for the past hour. "It was not you." Aeron shook his head.
"Yes. It was."
"Be quiet you foolish child!" Mavda's husband said from his perch.
"Aeron, Elena could never get better. The curse was too strong for her fragile mind. It was not you." Mavda was patting Aeron's back. The choice was now clear to Aeron.
"Mavda," He said, getting up from the too happy, too green grass. "I've made my descision." The old woman nodded gravely.
"I see. I will miss you, young Aeron." She said before tottering off. Aeron pulled the red drape from Elena's face. He was a tiny bit glad that death looked like sleep. He could just believe that Elena was napping. She would wake up in an hour or two, and they'd have a nice dinner to celebrate him completing another tower. No. Aeron shook his head. No. Death is not sleep. She is gone. Gone! Choking back tears as he lifted his love's limp and pale hand, he cradled her in his arms. Aeron opened the Oraclos Chain and shot it to the Observatory. Mavda had her heirloom back now. Aeron did not need it where he was headed.
"I love you, Elena." A fat tear plopped onto her ashen cheek and rolled onto her obscenely bloodied chest. Aeron could not bear to dress her in something else, nor to see where his hand, his chain, had killed her. "The Thirteen towers have changed us. This is all my fault. I made a promise. I told you we would get through this. Together." He coughed and more tears overwhelmed him. "We will be together. Always." Aeron took two steps forward and faced the chasm. He leaned. Air rushed past him as he fell, down, down, deep into the earth. He lifted Elena's finger. Aeron entwined her index finger with his. A small gold ribbon floated towards the tiny sky.
"To think that even like this..." Aeron said, squeezing his eyes closed. He heard a faint voice whisper.
"That we would still be together."
