Disclaimer: I do not own Bones…
After closing the door to Booth's apartment, Perotta hurried to catch up with Bones who was striding down the hallway.
"Why such a hurry? I mean, I didn't want to chase you out of Booth's apartment."
"You didn't", was Brennan's only reply, but the blonde FBI agent could easily tell that she was lying due to the tone of her voice she had used and now by seeing her pushing frantically on the elevator button. Perotta kept quiet and observed the forensic anthropologist out of the corner of her eye. Although she was doing her best to look impassive, her body was tense and her breathing seemed heavy. The elevator doors slid open and the two women stepped in. Bones hit the ground level button with such irritation that caused Perotta to smile.
"It was a wrong idea for me to stop by, wasn't it?"
Brennan glanced over at Payton "Why that?! No, really it's nice of you. And I believe Booth loves chili. You should have stayed."
"Now if I had, it would have upset you only more. I should have called first instead of bursting in and interrupting…"
Perotta stared at her reflection in the mirrored elevator doors.
"I beg your pardon? I'm not upset". Brennan recognized that her voice had betrayed her, she folded her arms and Perotta smiled. "Why are you smiling?"
Brennan's eyebrows furrowed at the blonde woman. The elevator came to a stop.
"Because you're funny."
Bones followed the agent to the parking lot, "But I told no joke! ... I don't understand!"
Perotta stopped in front of her car, fumbling in her purse for her keys, "Look!" she paused opening the door of her royal blue Audi, "Yes, I feel attracted to Booth. I really like him but … thanks to you, I now know that I'm only wasting my time."
"Wasting your time?! Thanks to me?! I have no idea what you're talking about!"
"You really don't, do you?" This same question she had used in their earlier conversation at the Jeffersonian and Brennan's confused look made her smile once again. Was she pretending not to notice? Or didn't she really get it? How come such a brilliant scientist didn't see the obvious? It wasn't hard to guess that Booths' feelings for Bones were reciprocated! Everyone at the Institute got that except the two involved … Perotta got into her car, still smiling and shaking her head slightly. She drove out of the parking lot leaving behind a bewildered Bones who was looking up at Booth's window where the lights had just been switched off …
