A Meaningful Relationship
Karkat was laying down on his "bed," a thing that humans slept on, apparently. He was on the meteor and, therefore, had not been able to sleep in his recuperacoon for quite a while. It was about two years into the trip, and he hated having to sleep in a bed, but the Trolls and Humans had already agreed that beds would be easier to get than recuperacoons. Karkat often slept on the floor, rather than his bed, for this very reason. Karkat thinks the real reason that there's no recuperacoons is because Dave doesn't want any slime getting anywhere, but regardless of the reason, they, as in everyone, had to use beds or the floor. What Karkat must have been feeling was homesickness.
Karkat was thinking about the Troll for whom he was flushed. The Troll he wanted so desperately to be with. The troll who would smell and lick things, because she was unable to see with her eyes. The Troll with red eyes, and red glasses. The Troll with the teal tears and the teal blood. Terezi. Karkat wanted so desperately to be with her. While she wasn't perfect, and Karkat obviously knew this, she was perfect to him.
He remembered how he had had a chance with Terezi, but he fucked up and kept giving her mixed signals. She eventually gave up on satisfying him, at least that's what Karkat supposes. Karkat had recently figured out about Terezi's kismesitude with Gamzee and, while he wasn't too mad about it, he was somewhat hurt, maybe from the fact that Terezi had lied to him.
This was much worse than when Terezi had a matespritship with Dave. This actually didn't bother Karkat much. Mainly for the facts that Terezi hadn't lied to Karkat or anyone else about it, and she actually wanted Dave to be her matesprit. It didn't bother Karkat because despite how much Karkat wanted Terezi as a matesprit, his favorite thing in the world was to see Terezi happy. So if being in a matespritship with Dave meant she was happy, then Karkat was fine with it. The reason Terezi's current kismesitude bothers Karkat so much is because of the lies, but also because of the fact that having a kismesitude can be cruel.
Many humans mistake the true meaning of having a kismesitude. Most think that it means wanting to kill your partner, i.e. the reason that most humans think kismesitudes don't make sense. The true meaning of a kismesitude is indeed to hurt your partner, and for the most part be mean, while also caring about them. Kismesises don't want each other to die. You want your kismesitude to live, and you don't want to fatally injure them. The meaning of having a kismesitude is to do mean things in a more mild way. You want to give minor injuries and make them cry,
Which is exactly why Terezi's kismesitude worried Karkat. Karkat hated to see Terezi injured, or to see her cry. The only good thing Karkat sees in the kismesitude is the fact that Terezi doesn't want Gamzee as a kismesitude, she wants him out of her life. Every now and then, Terezi says things that make Karkat think that maybe she is still flushed for him, as he is for her. He might just be being foolish, but he hopes not.
Karkat lays on his bed and he thinks about how he wishes he could just have a regular matespritship with Terezi. No complications. A life free of lies and a meaningful relationship.
