First Impressions
Diane was utterly confused. She sat in her office, staring into space as she thought about the encounter that recently occurred. Usually she was very good with first impressions; very few times did a person surprise her. After five minutes talking to a person, Diane could deduce quite a bit about them and instantly make a judgment about their character. It is a skill that came in handy over her years of being a lawyer. However, this time she was baffled. Nobody had stumped Diane so much as Kurt McVeigh had done in less than ten minutes.
From the way he dressed, spoke, and even how he stood, Diane obviously noted he was not a city man. However, he hardly spoke a word. He did not seem shy; he acted confident about their case...and yet the man barely spoke. But then, the look he gave her, that look when she remarked about living in a cabin, writing to editors. He must have realized it was a joke. Yet, that look. Was he judging her? It made her a bit uncomfortable thinking about it. Usually Diane did not care what others thought about her, but this time she was not about to have some gun-obsessed, Republican look down upon her.
Diane looked at the time before reaching for her bottle of scotch. She poured a small amount into the crystal glass. After a long sip, Diane went back to that moment when he looked at her. Maybe that was not it. She knew that was not the reason for why she felt so uncomfortable in that moment. It bothered her that he could look through her so easily, seeing every detail about who she was, the good and bad. That one look took her breath away, making her feel like a fragile, open book. Yet, when Diane stared into his eyes, she saw nothing. He was a complete mystery.
The worst part was that it intrigued her. She wanted to see more, figure out exactly who he was. However, she was not comfortable with feeling that vulnerable again. Diane took another long sip, finishing the glass. She tapped the crystal with her fingers and bit her lip, thinking about what to do. Obviously they would meet again, but Diane was not sure what the circumstances would be when they do. Work related, maybe...dinner, hopefully. Whatever the circumstances and conditions will be, Diane knew they would go far beyond just first impressions.
