Like Magic

Disclaimer: I do not own Sweeney Todd or the associated characters.

Insults had been coming Nellie's way for years. It was very true, she and Mr. Todd were forced into marriage, on an unplanned pregnancy from one night. Of course, it had been a few years since her child was born. Their child.

She had dark eyes and dark hair, just like her father. She loved to be around the shop, playing with their customer's children. She was a ray of sunshine on the people's lives... Most of them, that was.

When she could finally understand what they were saying, the insults that were like bullets through skin.

"She was an accident." They would say.

"Her father was a coward."

Maybe it was true. Sweeney left Nellie long ago. Why? She knew not. But secretly, Nellie would stay up late, past sundown, and hope maybe he'd come walking in the door- though she knew he wouldn't.

The words hurt more every passing day, reminding them his presence there was just a ghost. Though he didn't love her like he loved Lucy, he should have at least tried to love their daughter like he did Johanna.

But perhaps the most hurtful words like daggers were these, addressed to her daughter.

"Did you know your father played the best magic trick?"

"What?"

"He disappeared, just like a magician!"

Nellie sighed sadly. Like magic indeed.
