SUMMARY:

Jessica Smith is eleven years old and highly unusual. Her friends called her Jessie before she died.

STORY:

"Four eyes, four eyes." Jessie's brothers always teased here about her glasses but tonight they had gone too far. She left the house and decided to go for a walk to calm herself. She went for a very long walk and returned close to midnight.

All of a sudden, she heard a noise from behind one of the nearby bushes and froze. Then something ran out and Jessie, squinting, saw a black cat. It stopped right in front of her and she saw that it had two bright yellow eyes, which were reduced to slits. Suddenly, the bright yellow cats eyes burned green and went back to yellow and the cat ran away. Jessie, thinking that it was only an unusual neighbors cat, just walked calmly back home where her brothers were sleeping and she too went to bed.

Later that week as the full moon approached, Jessie started complaining that she had a constant tummy ache and her mum kept saying that her face was going more and more pale.

She stayed home from school for a few days until almost all her energy had drained out of her and she had to be taken to hospital. She had been put in a bed next to the window so she could see clearly outside.

Her mother had asked to take Jessie out of the hospital for the full moon and the hospital had agreed so on the afternoon of the full moon, Jessie's mother had come to pick her up. They went for a drive near the waterfront then onto a hill to watch the sunset. Jessie thought it was beautiful but as soon as it was over and they were about to leave for the hospital, a cloud shifted and the full moon was visible.

Jessie saw her mother's shadow on the ground and looked for hers but it wasn't there. Apparently, her mother had noticed because she too was looking around. The, all of a sudden, the strangest sensation took place in the pit of her stomach.

Her fingers were getting thicker and she was sprouting hair on her face, arms and legs. Then Jessie did the strangest thing; she howled at the wind. A high, shrill voice had escaped her and it made the hairs on her mothers neck stand on end.
