"He loves me." Riza slowly plucked a petal off the delicate flower.
Spring just wasn't her thing. As much as she loved seeing the new buds blossom into beautiful flowers and new leaves forming on trees, the whole spring fever and lovesickness just irritated her.
"He loves me not."
Maybe it was because the man she had sworn to follow and protect for the rest of her life never showed any sign of reciprocating the carefully guarded feelings she felt towards him.
"He loves me."
She frowned upon hearing the lie. How could she believe he loved her when he spent his time gallivanting with other ladies and wooing them?
"He loves me not."
But she didn't want to face the truth either. Why couldn't he see how much she was hurting inside? Hurting, hurting because of him.
"He loves me, he loves me not."
She crushed the stem in her hand and then let it fall to the ground.
"He loves me not," she repeated. It was time for her to move on, to forget about her love that would never happen.
"Riza."
She immediately reached for her pistols but strong callous hands caught her fists from behind. She turned around helplessly to her assaulter, to Roy Mustang, and looked into his eyes. There she saw pain, sadness and… was there a tiny trace of tenderness?
"Riza."
He said her name again, this time softer, slower. He glanced at her hands which were now limp, cupped by his own. He closed her right hand into a fist and then started opening it, finger by finger.
"I love you."
He looked earnestly into her eyes.
"I love you."
Riza bit her lip nervously and watched him uncurl her index finger.
"I love you."
The way he said it so gently was enough to bring tears to her eyes, but she fought them back.
"I love you."
He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her ring finger.
"I love you."
He used his index finger to trace circles on her palm. "Riza, I love you. It doesn't matter what the flowers say, or what you think about my feelings for you." He paused and wiped the stray tear that rolled down her cheek "I say that I love you."
Riza shook her head at his pride but pulled him towards her in an embrace anyway. The smile on her face was enough to make Roy forget about the punishment he'd receive once she would find out that Roy had been following her home nearly every day since she joined the military.
Ah, yes, today was a fine, sunny, spring day, where buds were blossoming into beautiful flowers and new leaves were forming on trees, and Riza would never forget it.
