Rudy laid there. Liesel ran over to him and knelt down by him. She started sobbing and began to shake him. HIs eyes opened slightly and Liesel made up her mind. She kissed him on the lips for what seemed like forever. When she finally pulled away his eyes were closed, but a smile played on his face. I backed away, knowing that it wasn't time for the lemon eyed boy to join me. Liesel laid her head against his chest. He weakly wrapped his arms around her. She could hear the rapid thumping of his heart. She listened to this marvelous sound, not realizing that she had just saved his life.

A simple explanation: Her kiss had given him the will to live

"Why." It was a simple word really but asked so much.

"I love you." She was admitting that to him and to herself. She refused to move, his arms around her and his heart at her ear. He was alive and to her that was all that mattered right now. An officer finally noticed the two and told them that they had to leave. They walked thorugh the destruction to the waiting car. Liesel got in first and Rudy sat beside her. She wondered when he had gotten so handsome. He was after all her best friend. Why hadn't she noticed?

A better question: When exactly had she falling in love with him?

She couldn't answer that. She just leaned awkwardly against his now not so thin frame. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders. She leaned further into his arms until her head once again touched his chest. She closed her eyes and tried to calm down and relax. Rudy quickly kissed her cheek. She smiled slightly. Papa and Mama were gone but at least she still had him. Papa and Mama...Tears fell from her eyes as she thought about them. The flood gates opened and her tears poured onto Rudy's shirt. She sobbed in earnest against him. Her tears soaked through his shirt, still he held her as close to his body as humanly possible. He couldn't remember seeing her so weak and hurt. It was breaking his heart, her crying. She settled down enough to talk a little.

"I can hear your heart beating."

"I know."

"I was so scared. I thought.."

"I know, but I'm okay."

"I kissed you. I.."

"Love me? I heard you." She smiled secretly.

"You shut up. I never- mff"

She couldn't finish her denial due to his returning the kiss. She wanted nothing more than for him to hold her and not ever let her go. She leaned even further into him, fitting perfectly against him. She drifted off to sleep on the way to wherever they were going. He smelt like apples and warm ashes. He felt that she needed him and vowed to never leave her like everyone else in her life had. He loved her and with all his heart. She yawned, swaying between dreams and reality.

"Rudy?"

"Yes?"

"I wanted to tell you," another yawn," that I love you."

"I love you more." She cuddled closer, as if she could get closer.

"Rudy?"

"Yes?"

"I'm scared." She had never mentioned fear to anyone but Papa before. He assured her that they would both be alright. The police officer took them to Frau Herrman to stay. And that officer also hoped that what he had heard and witnessed would last.
