"Elphie, have you ever looked at the stars and wondered what's out there?" The blonde girl was gazing peacefully out of the window. Elphaba was reading.
"Not really." She replied, not taking her eyes away from the words on the page. Galinda was not deterred.
"Well, have you ever wanted to fly up there and find out?" She asked happily.
"Not really." Still the green girl read, paying no attention to her room mate.
"What about just flying in general?" Galinda, her attention span being not very long had stopped looking out of the window and was looking at Elphaba and fidgeting with the pink bedcover. Elphaba put her book down and sighed, annoyed.
"Are you going to be pestering me all night? I'm reading."
"I know. I'm just curious." The now quite hyper girl had gotten bored with sitting and was bouncing on her bed. "I'd like to fly. I think it would be fun."
"What would you do if you fell?" Elphaba replied, having realised that reading when Galinda was in this mood was a lost cause. Galinda pouted prettily at her, ignoring her irritation.
"You always look on the down side Elphie. Haven't you ever heard of a smile?" She smiled, just in case this was indeed the case and Elphaba needed a demonstration. "And I just wouldn't fall."
"May the Unnamed God help us all if you ever learn to fly. The birds would never be the same." Elphaba muttered. Galinda sneered at her, but was not overly offended by the remark. After a moment of silence she said:
"Elphie, you're good at magic. Make me fly."
"I'd rather not."
"Oh please, it'll be fun." Galinda pleaded. Elphaba was about to reply that they had very different ideas of fun and that she would rather read when an idea came to her. She faked a groan and said:
"Okay, but only if you promise to stop pestering me." Galinda was surprised but nodded happily. "First, you'll have to go outside the room. This spell requires me to have a lot of space." Galinda nodded again and cheerfully left.
"Anything else?" The blonde girl asked.
"Yes. Stand with your back to the doorway and jump up and down." Galinda looked dismayed.
"Do I have to?"
"Do you want to fly?" Galinda obediently began jumping up and down, looking around in case people saw her, but luckily there was no one there.
"Now what?" She asked.
"Now I'll chant a spell." The 'witch' walked to the door and chanted in a sing-song voice:
I hope you learn your lesson,
For you'll make a funny sight,
Don't disturb me when I'm reading,
Or I'll lock you out at night.
Galinda turned around in shock at these words, as Elphaba laughed and locked the door. Her small friend was left outside with no key, wearing her pink pyjamas. She spent the night in the threshold.
Galinda refused to speak to Elphaba for two days after the incident. However, as she recalled the look of surprise on Galinda's face when the door closed, Elphaba thought that it was worth it. It cheered her up when someone said something particularly hurtful.
Who said she had no sense of humour?
