The two were shoved into the closet with a quick, "The only way you two are getting out of that closet is if you kiss, or one of you starts crying!" the door clicked with a lock, and the walls buzzed with a barrier preventing Molasses from teleporting out. She sighed, grateful that Grillby was a pretty decent light source.

"This reminds me of that one time when we got kidnapped and I accidentally learned out to summon my bones." The closet was small, but the two had been in more difficult situations before. Molasses shifted around, trying to get even more comfortable.

Grillby snorted, "I remember that. You had to carry me because you poked a hole in one of the water barrels." his purple flames flickered with mirth.

"Yeah, I also remember that dad kept calling you princess after that." Grillby groaned, and pressed the heal of his hand to his forehead.

"I forgot about that."

"I didn't!"

Grillby rolled his eyes and let a smile stretch across his scarred face.

Molasses snorted, "oh my god remember when that one time when we were traveling, and I kept pointing at random things and saying "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto." She shook against his chest with laughter.

"Y'know, I never got that reference, until several thousand years later." That sobered her pretty damn quick.

The silence weighed on them heavily.

"You trust me, right?" The word 'trust' came out of his mouth, heavy with foreign use. Trust between their kind, and especially between them and the humans, was very difficult to maintain. Trust meant almost literally holding someone's life in your hands. Their time underground was harsh. It hardened it. It broke them. Trust was for someone you were serious about.

"Of course." She felt him nod.

He laid his head on top of hers, and listened to the hum of her magic, wild and disastrously smart, fiercely protective of her family. Deep. Comforting.

Almost motherly. He had wondered about that.

"Do you..." Molasses broke the silence, gently and shyly. Uncertain. Whatever she had to say, it had weighed on her for seemingly eons. "Do you believe in reincarnation?"
