Just
"I didn't think kidnappers interacted with their hostages."
Mello gave a wry smirk and leaned back against the door as he eyed the chocolate eyed girl on the floor. Chocolate indeed. But no, they were really just a plain brown, he thought after a while, nowhere near as decadent and rich as the sweet confection he loved so much.
"You don't look like a criminal. Or…rather, you look too young to be one."
Is that so? I'm glad you think that.
The girl fidgeted under the boy's heavy, green gaze and picked at the chain wrapped around her ankles. She had probably already figured out that if he hadn't hurt her yet, he wasn't going to any time soon. Still though, the blond revelled in the fear evident in her eyes.
Means I'm doing something right.
The Yagami girl made a small, fearful noise and pulled her knees to her chest, looking at the black laced boots in front of her. Whatever was left of Mello's heart went out to her but his expression remained vaguely amused and dry.
"I just…want to go home," she whispered, closing her eyes that shone with tears.
No one can go home after something like this. For that, I'm sorry.
And it was true. He knew what it was like for things to just change. Just like that. It was unfair and altogether a random catastrophe that could tear out the child in you and thrust it to the wolves whose jaws bled a dark knowledge and a bitter sense of understanding.
He wished, that it didn't have to be this way. Because it really shouldn't and she hadn't done anything to deserve this. Just a lone hitchhiker who stole a ride with the wrong person.
The boy reached into his jacket and pulled out his chocolate bar, snapping off a piece and with gloved fingers and walking slowly towards his captive, his boots echoing heavily on the ground.
There was the creak of leather as he knelt down, balancing on his toes and reaching forward to lift the girl's chin up. She flinched and squeezed her eyes shut as he did so, a repressed sob escaping her lips as she trembled and shook. She wasn't going to look at him any time soon. So instead, the boy lifted her hand and placed the piece of chocolate in it, already slightly melted and sticky.
He let go of her and stood up then, watching from above as she dared a frightened glance up at him and then at her hand.
Mello then took a bite out of the bar himself, as if to make a point to her that it wasn't poisoned.
And just like that, he turned around and walked away, thought not before hearing the last words she ever spoke to him.
"Thank you."
As he closed the door behind him, the blond allowed a humourless chuckle to rise from his throat.
Don't thank me for ruining your life.
