Brambleclaw shivered in the night. He pressed his pelt against Jayfeather who was walking beside him.
"Are you alright?" Brambleclaw asked.
"I'm fine," snapped Jayfeather. He began to walk faster leaving Brambleclaw behind. Brambleclaw knew he was still mourning for his sister, Hollyleaf, who had been killed in the recent war.
Then he realized that Jayfeather was several fox-lengths ahead and hurried to catch up.
When he caught up Jayfeather's whiskers twitched. "WindClan patrol ahead," he informed Brambleclaw.
"A blind medicine cat knows where a patrol is better than the deputy," commented a challenging voice from above them.
Brambleclaw and Jayfeather glanced upward. The moonhigh WindClan patrol stood on a hill and consisted of four cats; Onestar, Webfoot, Weaselfur and Tornear.
"Silence Webfoot" commanded Onestar. "They would have a reason for crossing WindClan territory." He and the rest of the patrol climbed down the hill and looked at Brambleclaw expectantly.
"We are heading to the Moonpool so I can recieve my nine lives," mewed Brambleclaw simply.
Onestar choked. "What! Firestar's dead?!"
Brambleclaw dipped his head respectfully. "He lost his ninth life during a fight with Tigerstar," Brambleclaw replied spitting his father's name in disgust.
"He was a noble cat and a good friend," Onestar meowed soberly.
Until you severed that friendship. Brambleclaw growled inwardly.
"But he has a worthy successor," looking at Brambleclaw sincerely.
"Thank you Onestar," Mewed the to-be-leader curtly.
"We must be going. We are wasting moonlight," Jayfeather flicked his tail irritably and trotted up the path leading to the Moonpool leaving Brambleclaw to catch up with him again.
"StarClan goes with you Brambleclaw! See you at the Gathering!" With that Onestar gathered his cats with a sweep of his tail and walked back up the hill.
Brambleclaw picked up the pace and was next to Jayfeather again. Jayfeather led him into a cave and he saw the Moonpool for the first time. Brambleclaw's eyes widen at the magnificent sight. The pool was shining a silvery light and beautiful mist rose from the water.
"What do I do?" He asked Jayfeather.
"Lap up a bit of water and StarClan will come to you," he replied.
Brambleclaw did as he was instructed and soon darkness overtook him.
After what felt like moons, he opened his eyes. He was standing in the middle of the clearing in Fourtrees. Fourtrees! But that was at the old forest! Jayfeather somehow was still next to him. But he looked different.
Brambleclaw gasped. Jayfeather's eyes were not blind and unfocused no longer. Instead they were clear, focused and trained on the space ahead of him.
"You can see!" meowed Brambleclaw.
"Yes," he replied. "But only in dreams, not that it makes a difference."
Then, slowly cats began to assemble in front of him.
"Brambleclaw. Are you ready to recieve your nine lives?" The question did not come from a single cat but from all of them.
"Yes," he mewed confidently sounding a lot stronger than he felt.
