Checkmate

Weasley has a rather conservative way of playing chess, Shikamaru muses as he says, "Checkmate."

.

There's a lot one can learn about someone from playing a game of strategy with them. Shikamaru knows this because he's played shogi, go, and now, chess, with many, many people and has come out with just a little more knowledge about them.

Ino, as rarely as she does play, plays foolishly. She doesn't think ahead too far, and often makes moves arbitrarily, though that might be due to the fact that one, she sucks at strategy games, two, she isn't even interested.

Choji, when he does play, plays timidly. He doesn't make any attacks and simply defends the best he can until Shikamaru inevitably wins.

Ron Weasley is amongst his better opponents his age, Shikamaru will grant him that, but comparing him to Kakashi-san and his father, he's not that good.

Going over the moves, Ron hesitates every time he has to order a sacrifice like he doesn't want to do it. He seems to try and find the most efficient way; to checkmate with the minimal amount of losses. It reminds him of many experienced shinobi, but one over all of them. Who is it?

The redhead doesn't look all that surprised, as though he'd been expecting it. But he does look up towards Shikamaru with a freckled grin. "We should play again sometime, mate," he says.

Ah, yes. Asuma-sensei.

"Sure," Shikamaru agrees.

Because Ron Weasley isn't all that bad a guy. Seriously. Why does fanfiction hate him so much?
