Chapter 1

I feel the dark impact of knowing. The fierce fire when the piercing metal meets my skin, sending me flying in the air. I am sailing, and angel of heavan, an angel of darkness. It feels beautiful, in a strange way. The pain like fire is almost comforting. I sigh, taking in the crisp, cold oxygen air in deeply. I can already see their faces- my friends, that is- as they watch in horror of what is happening. Yes, I paid my toll. I took my life to save the one girl who was about to commit suicide. What's ironic, though, is that the girl I'm saving is the girl I bullied for the past six years. It was 12:30 AM when I left the party. They all came running after me-Hannah, Becca, Beth, Lucy, Jason, and Will- they had no idea why I was running after the freak show of the century. Zoey Belgdom is why. Even I still feel strange doing this, but its a peaceful strange. The strange that is eerie but calm. The strange that is exciting, but scary. I'm loosing thought here...

Crack, Thud, whatever you should call it. My head lands forcefully on the newly paved road. I am two houses down from Hannah's. That's right, I was at her party when I saw Zoey there. Then Zoey saw me and took off running. Well of course, you can tell what I did after that. Yes, I chased her down. Right when she stepped in front of road where the van was coming directly as her, 55 miles per hour, I pushed her out of the way. I shoved her to the grass by ditch and our eyes met one final time before the red minivan hit me. Right on my hip, sending me sky high.

I hear the sirens of an ambulance. I hear my friends crying and panicking as they are confusing, scared, desperate even. Their voices are beginning to mix with sentences of 'Is she dead?' 'No, she can't be!' 'She must be unconscious...' 'Why would Grace, of all people, do that?' That last one stuck with me. Well, actually they all did. Right now I don't think I am dead, but I'm not sure. Maybe my soul is still living, but my body isn't. I don't know.

I begin to hear the police questioning what happened. One officer is talking to Hannah, another is talking to the man in the minivan. I see a stretcher slowly making its way over to me. Actually everything is moving in slow motion. Like the way it does in those horror movies when the girl gets hit by the drunk driver. Heh, ironic again.

I see a light. It's faint, but in an instant it burst open. What's happening, am I dead, am I in surgery? The light begins the fade and I find myself running, sprinting even, to catch up with it. I cannot see my body at all, which confuses me deeply. What's stranger is that I can't distinguish if the light is pitch black or sun bright. It's like its both at the same time. Finally the light disappears, but I think I am still running.

And then I fall.

Fall.

Fall.

Fall.
