Flashback
Kai trudged around route 12, kicking rocks as he trekked further down the path to the Pokémon center. I can't believe we lost to Joey, he thought. His stupid Rattata was too fast. Kirlia, who usually walked in an elegant manner, had a slight limp. Being a new trainer was difficult for Kai. He had always envisioned himself as a gym leader; but how could he ever fulfill such a dream when he can't even beat Joey? Suddenly, a harsh, baritone voice broke the silence that engulfed the pair. Kai stopped, and Kirlia mimicked his movements. Glancing at a thicket of trees where the voice came from, Kai began to stalk towards the noise. Eavesdropping wasn't exactly something Kai did as a hobby, but his curiosity prevailed. "YOU. ARE. A. DISGRACE. Who could ever want you? You're an ugly Pokémon to begin with." The male sneered. "Stop staring at me and GO. You're weak. You're nothing." Splash. We must be near a river, he thought, concentrating on the sounds of water. The male walked away, leaving whatever Pokémon he had abandoned. Kai walked to the spot where the entire ordeal occurred. In the water in front of him was a Feebas. "Hey, little guy.." He started out. The Feebas blatantly ignored him. "Erm. Little girl?" This got the female Feebas to look at him. "Look, I heard what your trainer said to you-" Feebas cringed at the word trainer, "-and I just wanted to see if you were okay." Feebas was shocked. How could a trainer be so kind to a Pokémon that he didn't even know? She regarded him coolly, not believing his nice words. All trainers were terrible people. Berkley, Feebas' ex-partner, taught her just that. Kai noticed her dark demeanor. "I know you might think that I'm a bad guy, but I can prove to you that I'm decent," he said. "Kirlia! Come here." Kirlia popped out of the thicket. Her injuries weren't as noticeable. "You see, this is my best friend Kirlia. She was my first Pokémon and partner." Feebas was shocked to see how much the two cared for each other. She was jealous of their friendship. Never could she have a trainer that could love her as much as Kai loved Kirlia. Kai smiled at Feebas. "You and I just met, Feebas, but I can tell when a Pokémon wants affection. Join Kirlia and I on our adventure! I aspire to become a gym leader. One day.. But until then, we will all train together. I just know with you on our team, we can accomplish whatever life has in store for us! What do you say?" Feebas' expression was stoic. What does she want to do? Live life as a lonely Pokémon, scouring the waters for who knows what… Or join Kai on his adventure and train with him. His amazing personality was growing on her. Kai reached into his bag and pulled out a pokéball. A smile found its way on her face, and she did a flip in the water. Kai grinned, and Feebas hesitantly allowed herself to be caught. The pokéball rocked three times before it made a clicking sound. Feebas was now apart of Kai's team!
It took years for Kai to accomplish his goal with. Along the way, Kirlia evolved into Gardevoir, and thanks to the many free complimentary massages given to Feebas by Kai's friend Daisy Oak, and an abundance of indigo berries found in various berry bushes, Feebas evolved into Milotic. Four more lifelong friends were added to Kai's team as well; Altaria, Sylveon, Bellossom, and Spritzee. With a mix of teamwork, eternal friendship, and the help of gym leaders from all over the globe, Kai O. became the first ever fairy type gym leader!
