Because I love You

Disclaimer: Never seen it, don't own it, don't care to own it. I do own a Muse magazine edition all about shipworms and Horatio Hornblower though.

Author's note: I have never actually seen nor read Horatio Hornblower, so don't blame moi if a few things are wrong. I wrote this for Forsetti and Eurphrosyne because they were always badgering me about my choice of penname. Now I just chose a loverly French name, but it turned out that Mariette married Horatio, and so my friend got mad at me because she's insane and loves Horatio. Poor dear. This was written pretty much at midnight, which is why it's so strange.

Dear Horatio,

I did this because I love you. Oh, my dearest, I see now what I failed to see before. I am not for you. No, do not protest, my love. I see the longing in your eyes when you look to sea.

How could I have thought to make you settle down? How could I have sought the title Mrs. Horatio Hornblower? You were wed long ago to the sea. She is your mother, your nursemaid, your lover, your wife. Your precious ships are your children. The sea makes you a man, my love.

I could see the changes quickly. Why did I not act and release you from this prison of land, wife, and children? The longer I kept you from the sea, the more restless you got. You couldn't sleep. You told more stories then ever before. You yelled. Time was even spent at the pub.

So now, my love - go back to your beloved ships and oceans. Teach your son the love and respect you have for them. Our housekeeper knows of a good nanny in the meantime. But do not become tied down once more. Become as you once were - wild and free, charming and handsome! I shall hold you back no more.

Your sea shall decide my fate. I sacrifice myself to Her for taking you away. Do not be mad at the ocean for accepting me. I chose this fate. And I shall be watching from above.

I shall love you forever, Horatio, and I know you will too. But the sea calls to you, and I cannot keep you any longer from your rightful queen. Goodbye, my one love, farewell!

-Mariette
