The Darkest Night

Or

What You Never Wished it to Be

Note: This is another one of those "give a Shakespeare comedy a more darker feel" kind of things. Almost as if the comedy became the tragedy. The characters and plot are based very much on Shakespeare, but it is not Shakespeare. If you want to read real Shakespeare, go somewhere else.

The crab scuttled along the shore, its small legs scratching dents into the perfectly smooth sand. It soon came across something large and wet. Seal? Whale? Bird? Whatever it was, it was close to dying by drowning and the crab didn't like dead things he couldn't eat. Scuttling away, he didn't hear the large wet thing give a cough and moan. Strands of her black hair laid limply over her face and irritatedly she brushed them away. Using some of her new found strength, she climbed away from the slowly incoming tide and flipped herself onto her back. Her clothes were ripped to tatters, her face and arms scattered with small cuts and bruises. Groaning again, she lifted her head up and coughed some seawater out of her lungs. Laying back down, images flashed through her mind. The storm: a maelstrom the captain had called it. And her brother, Sebastian. Her souls mirror laughing, saying it would go away soon. He was wrong. She rolled onto her side. They were all gone now. Sebastian, her father, her mother, even the captain. All gone, all dead.

There's nobody left. I'm all alone. That hit her hard.

I'm all alone.

She curled herself into a ball and wept. She wept for her parents, who died before they could say goodbye. She cried for the captain, whose name never she would never know. She even cried for her brother's boyfriend, Antonio, who called her Apple just to annoy her. But most of all, she wept for her brother, Sebastian, her twin. The tears never stopped. Always flowing down her cheeks. It hurts so much, like there's a hole in my chest.

"Hey, you okay?"

Viola looked up at the voice and nearly jumped into the air. It was the captain.

Oh thank god he's alive!

"Sebastian…"

The captain looked at her with sorrow in his eyes.

"He's gone Violet. Antonio too. I couldn't do anything I…"

He stopped and he brushed the hair out of her face.

"Where are we?" Violet murmured, trying to sit up. Then all of the sudden she felt dizzy and laid back down.

"Illyria. We're in Illyria."

"Illyria-" She whispered, her eyes closing.

Then she fell into impenetrable darkness.
