Number 8

DISCLAIMER: OK, I'd been writing this fic since...forever, and then I read it through and decided I didn't like it anymore... so I'm rewriting. This is the first chapter, which I haven't rewritten at all, but if you think it needs it, please don't hesitate to tell me what needs changing and I'll do my best to improve its quality, as this is a fic that's been going long before I began posting on and as a result is one of the first I ever wrote. Anyway, me no own digimon. And Sharmamon? Digimon World for PSOne they featured in 'Velvet Whispers' as well.

Gennai was sitting reading when the attack came.

He was curled up in his armchair by the fire, when suddenly there was a pounding on his door. His head shot up from his book. He knew that wasn't a knock. Gennai jumped up from his chair but before he could cross to the door a spiked, bone club smashed it through. Sharmamon.

Gennai was shocked. In his mind, thoughts were racing. How had they managed to get down here? The waters above his home parted only when he instructed them. Why were they here? Digimon respected him widely. The questions remained unanswered as the door was wrenched off its hinges and a vast amount of Sharmamon poured in, shattering things in their wake. Gennai was knocked down, and he hit his head. As he sat dazed, a Sharmamon with a hat on jumped up onto his broken desk and started shouting orders at the others.

Through his blurred vision Gennai saw someone step in through his door. This someone had a truly disgusted look on his face at all the mess the Sharmamon were making. But he was no friend of Gennai's.

"You!" Gennai spat, with more malice than anyone had ever heard before in his voice. "What do you want?"

The digimon regarded Gennai coolly. "What I want is of little concern to you."

A pair of Sharmamon grabbed him. Gennai was helpless as the tall digimon swept around the room. His long cloak blew behind him as he moved, scattering papers. His heavy boots crunched any rubble underfoot. He ran one long, gloved finger along Gennai's bookcase, until he came to a tiny gap between two books. He smiled unpleasantly, showing off gleaming, pointed teeth, then reached between the two books and removed ten cards, picturing different digimon.

"So that's what it is," Gennai whispered, with barely controlled anger. "The key cards."

The digimon did not answer him, but turned instead to the two Sharmamon holding him. "Make sure we are not followed, do you understand?"

Without waiting for an answer he left the house.

Gennai pulled at his arms, trying to get free. So intent on this was he that he did not notice the club swinging downwards until the last moment.
